Call or Text (352) 722-5295Tuning on the 2011-2014 Ford 6.7L Powerstroke
Ford launched the 6.7L Power Stroke at 390 hp and 735 lb-ft, then gave early 2011 trucks a free reflash to 400 hp and 800 lb-ft, and that rating carried through 2014. The calibration in the PCM controls a Bosch high-pressure common-rail system with piezo injectors, a GT32 SST single-sequential turbo with a double-sided compressor wheel, and the 6R140 TorqShift six-speed, the only transmission offered behind this engine. Ford's 2015 jump to 440 hp and 860 lb-ft came with new hardware: a larger GT37 turbo, revised injector nozzles and an updated high-pressure pump. A 2011-2014 truck cannot reach 2015 ratings on a flash alone.
What tuning stresses on these trucks
The turbo is the first limit. Aggressive tuning drives the GT32 SST past 150,000 rpm shaft speed and into high drive pressure, and that is the main reason these turbos fail from overspeed. Turbo screech and overspeed codes are the warning signs. The transmission is the second limit. Tuning that adds power or delays converter lock-up overworks the single-friction factory converter; watch for lock-up slip and high trans temps. The standard pairing for any tuned 2011-2014 truck is CP4 protection, charge-pipe upgrades and transmission cooling.
Mild calibration vs. custom tuning
For most towing and daily-driven trucks, a mild calibration that keeps turbo speed in check is the sensible choice. Custom tuning makes sense when your truck has hardware a preloaded file does not account for, or when you want shift and lock-up behavior tailored to the way you tow. Either way, the calibration should keep the DPF, SCR/DEF and EGR systems working as Ford designed them, and owners in California or states that follow CARB rules should look for a CARB Executive Order number that covers their model year.
What we carry
This collection holds custom-tuning hardware. From HP Tuners there is the MPVI4, the interface that connects a laptop to the truck, and the RTD4 in a Southern Diesel Supply Edition. SPE Motorsport offers its 5-position plug-and-play SOFT switch for 2011-2019 6.7L PowerStroke trucks and a 5-position switch bracket that covers 1999-2022 7.3L, 6.0L, 6.4L and 6.7L PowerStroke trucks. Calibrated Power Solutions makes a no-drill DSP switch bracket for 2011-2022 6.7L Powerstroke trucks. For programmers and modules across every platform, see the tuners page.
Fitment notes
Much of the hardware here is listed for a wider span than 2011-2014, but calibrations are not interchangeable across that span. 2015-2016 trucks run different turbo, injector and pump hardware, and even an EO-numbered inline module like the Banks Derringer lists different gains for 2011-2014 than for 2015-2016. Chassis cab F-350, F-450 and F-550 trucks carry a 300 hp, 660 lb-ft calibration and a different Garrett turbo than the pickups, so tell us which you have. Verify by VIN before you order.
Frequently asked questions
How much power can a tune add to a 2011-2014 6.7L?
It depends on the tune and the hardware. As one documented example, the Banks Derringer 66653 lists up to +72 hp and +148 lb-ft on 2011-2014 trucks, more than the +61 hp and +120 lb-ft it lists for 2015-2016. A 2011-2014 truck still will not match 2015 ratings on calibration alone, because Ford's 2015 gains came with a new turbo, injectors and pump.
Is tuning hard on the factory turbo?
It can be. Aggressive tuning pushes the GT32 SST past 150,000 rpm shaft speed with high drive pressure, and that is the main cause of its overspeed failures. Keep the calibration conservative on a stock turbo, and treat turbo screech or overspeed codes as a reason to stop and have it checked.
Does tuning affect the 6R140 transmission?
Yes. More power, or a tune that delays converter lock-up, overworks the factory single-friction torque converter and raises transmission temperatures. Plan on added transmission cooling for any tuned 2011-2014 truck, and treat lock-up slip as a sign the converter is struggling.
What does a 5-position switch do?
It lets you change between the tune positions your calibration supports from the driver's seat. SPE's plug-and-play SOFT switch is listed for 2011-2019 6.7L PowerStroke trucks, and SPE's 5-position bracket gives it a mount. A single-position calibration has no use for it.
Do I need a tune with a CARB EO number?
If your truck is registered in California or a state that follows CARB rules, a street-driven tune should carry a CARB Executive Order number for your model year. EO-numbered options for these years include the Edge Evolution CTS3 and the Banks Derringer 66653, which carries EO D-161-127. Confirm the EO matches your exact year before you buy.
