Call or Text (352) 722-5295Tank sumps on the 2011-2014 Ford 6.7L Powerstroke
From the factory, the 6.7L Powerstroke draws fuel through an in-tank sender to an electric low-pressure pump built into the frame-mounted Diesel Fuel Conditioning Module (DFCM), which also holds the 10-micron primary filter and water separator. Fuel then passes a 4-micron secondary filter on the engine before it reaches the Bosch CP4.2. Aftermarket supply upgrades go one of two ways: replace the in-tank sender with a pump of its own, or mount a lift pump on the frame rail. A sump belongs to the second path. It sits in the bottom of the tank and gives the frame-rail pump a gravity feed. Sump kits can be specific to the tank and bed length.
Why the supply side matters
The CP4.2 is lubricated by the fuel it pumps and is sensitive to lubricity, water and aerated fuel. Aerated or low-lubricity fuel can let it wear and shed metal through the rails, injectors and return, and that turns a pump problem into a whole-system replacement of pump, rails, injectors and high-pressure lines. Weak low-pressure supply and air leaks are also on the list of things that can set a P0087 low rail pressure code. A well-planned feed from the tank is part of keeping the system healthy.
Choosing a sump
Start with the lift pump kit you are running and what it expects. Some sumps here are a single-hole design. Others build a fuel return into the sump, so the return line from your system has a place to land without a separate fitting in the tank. If your kit plumbs a return to the tank, a return-style sump keeps the job simpler. Installing a sump means working on the tank itself, and we do that work in our Wildwood, FL bays.
What we carry
- XDP MFG XD182 fuel tank sump, one-hole design.
- XDP MFG XD243 fuel tank sump, one-hole design with fuel return.
- BD Diesel 1050330 Flow-Max fuel tank sump.
- G&R Diesel GRD00153 bottom sump with integrated return.

Fitment notes
Because sump kits can be specific to the tank and bed length, confirm each listing against your truck. These trucks came with a 6.75 ft or 8 ft bed depending on cab and wheelbase. If you already run the Fleece PowerFlo, skip the sump; its active fill bucket does that job. Verify by VIN, or call us before you cut into a tank.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a sump with a frame-rail lift pump?
Sumps exist for that setup: they give a frame-rail pump a gravity feed from the bottom of the tank. Check your lift pump kit's instructions to see which pickup method it is designed around, and match the sump to your tank and bed length.
Should I choose a sump with a built-in return?
If your fuel system sends a return line back to the tank, a return-style sump such as the XDP XD243 or the G&R Diesel GRD00153 gives it a home in the same fitting. If it does not, a single-hole sump like the XDP XD182 keeps things simple.
Will a sump fix a low rail pressure code?
Not on its own. P0087 can come from restricted filters, weak low-pressure supply, air leaks, electrical faults, excessive injector return or a failing CP4.2. Test low-side pressure and inspect the filter before you decide a supply upgrade is the fix.
