2011-2014 Ford 6.7L Powerstroke Engine Oil

Engine oil and oil additives for the 2011-2014 Ford F-250, F-350 and F-450 Super Duty with the 6.7L Powerstroke. Ford prefers 10W-30, lists 5W-40, 15W-40 and 0W-40 as alternatives, and calls for API CJ-4 oil meeting WSS-M2C171-F1. Buy to that spec and to Ford's grade list, not to the marketing on the front of the jug.

Engine oil for the 2011-2014 Ford 6.7L Powerstroke

The 6.7L Powerstroke holds 13.0 quarts with the filter. That's a little over three gallons, so a full change takes four of the 1-gallon jugs on this page with a few quarts left over for top-offs. Ford's preferred grade is 10W-30, with 5W-40, 15W-40 and 0W-40 listed as alternatives, and synthetic is recommended. The interval is 10,000 miles in normal service and 5,000 in severe service.

What goes wrong with oil on this engine

Two things show up on these trucks. The first is fuel dilution: post-injection during active DPF regeneration puts fuel in the oil, and short trips and long idling make it worse. A rising dipstick or a diesel smell is the sign; more highway driving and less idling cut it down. The second is a clogged CCV oil separator, which raises crankcase pressure, pushes oil past healthy seals and shows up as higher oil consumption and oily charge pipes. Diesel Hub recommends replacing the separator every 30,000 to 40,000 miles.

Choosing an oil

The grades here that match Ford's list include Hot Shot's Secret Green Diamond, Blue Diamond PAO and Black Diamond Outlaw 10W-30, Lucas Synthetic Blend 10W-30 CK-4, Hot Shot's Secret Green Diamond and Blue Diamond 5W-40, and 15W-40 oils from both brands. The page also carries Hot Shot's ADRENALINE R-Series racing oils in 5W-20, 10W-30, 15W-40 and 20W-50, and a Green Diamond 0W-20 light-duty diesel oil. 0W-20, 5W-20 and 20W-50 aren't on Ford's list for the 6.7L, so if you're filling this engine, stay with the listed grades. Whatever you buy, read the API category and approvals printed on the jug and compare them to Ford's CJ-4 and WSS-M2C171-F1 spec.

What we carry

From Hot Shot's Secret: Green Diamond, Blue Diamond and Black Diamond Outlaw diesel engine oils, ADRENALINE R-Series racing oils, TBN Booster fortified oil stabilizer, FR3 Friction Reducer and The Original Stiction Eliminator. From Lucas Oil: 15W-40 and Synthetic 15W-40 CK-4, Synthetic Blend 10W-30 CK-4, Magnum High TBN 15W-40 CI-4, Heavy Duty and Synthetic Heavy Duty Oil Stabilizer, and TB Zinc Plus engine break-in additive. From XDP: X-Factor high performance oil additive. Additives go in on top of a correctly spec'd oil, never in place of one.

Fitment notes

Oil fits by spec, not by part number. Match the grade to Ford's list, match the API category and Ford approval on the jug to CJ-4 and WSS-M2C171-F1, and buy enough for 13.0 quarts. If you're on the 5,000-mile severe schedule, you'll be buying twice as often as a truck on the 10,000-mile schedule.

Frequently asked questions

Can I run 15W-40 in a 2011-2014 6.7L Powerstroke?

Yes. Ford lists 15W-40 as an alternative to the preferred 10W-30. Whichever grade you choose, it should meet API CJ-4 and Ford WSS-M2C171-F1.

How much oil does the 6.7L Powerstroke take?

13.0 quarts with the filter. Four 1-gallon jugs cover a change with a few quarts left for top-offs between services.
