2011-2014 Ford 6.7L Powerstroke Coolant Tanks

Degas bottles, expansion tanks and caps for the 2011-2014 Ford F-250, F-350 and F-450 with the 6.7L Powerstroke. This engine has two of them, one for the primary cooling loop and one for the secondary, and they do more than hold coolant. Watching which one drops is a quick way to narrow down a leak.

Degas bottles on the 2011-2014 Ford 6.7L Powerstroke

Ford gave each cooling loop on the 6.7L Powerstroke its own degas bottle. The primary bottle serves the high-temperature loop that cools the block, heads, oil cooler, turbo and heater core. The secondary bottle serves the low-temperature loop for the air-to-water intercooler, fuel cooler, the second half of the EGR cooler and the transmission cooler. The secondary loop holds only 2.0 gallons, against 7.25 to 7.75 gallons in the primary, so its bottle shows a loss much sooner.

What the bottles tell you

A steadily dropping secondary bottle points to the intercooler, EGR cooler or fuel cooler. A dropping primary bottle points to the radiator, water pump, oil cooler or heads. Secondary loss with no outside leak commonly traces to the air-to-water intercooler leaking internally, which shows up as white smoke and coolant residue in the charge pipes, or to the EGR cooler. Owners usually find it only after pressure testing the secondary system.

That's why a new tank isn't a cure for disappearing coolant. Replace the bottle or cap when the bottle or cap itself is the problem, and chase the leak separately.

Stock replacement vs. upgrade

A factory-style reservoir restores the system as built. It's the simple fix for a damaged bottle on a truck you want to keep stock, whether it's an XLT on daily duty or a Lariat that pulls a camper. Aluminum tanks are the upgrade route for owners who want a fabricated metal part in place of the original. Either way, check which loop the tank is built for before it goes in the cart.

What we carry

Dorman 603-277 is a factory-style coolant recovery tank reservoir listed for 2011-2016. Mishimoto offers the MMRT-F2D-11P aluminum primary degas tank, the MMRT-F2D-11S secondary expansion tank and the MMRT-F2D-11K expansion tank kit. No Limit Fabrication builds a secondary coolant tank. For the cap, the XDP XD215 coolant recovery tank reservoir cap is listed for 2003-2016 6.0L, 6.4L and 6.7L Powerstroke trucks.

Fitment notes

Check which loop a tank is for before you order. Primary and secondary bottles are different parts. Year ranges vary too: the Dorman reservoir is listed for 2011-2016, the Mishimoto primary tank and tank kit for 2011-2019, the Mishimoto secondary tank for 2011-2022 and the No Limit secondary tank for 2011-2026. When you refill, put coolant in the right bottle. Filling or pressure-testing the wrong system is an easy mistake, and techs have overlooked the primary tank after EGR work. Ford's coolant is Motorcraft Orange VC-3-B mixed 50/50 with distilled water, in both loops. Verify by VIN if you're not sure.

Frequently asked questions

My secondary coolant bottle keeps dropping. Is the tank bad?

Probably not. A dropping secondary bottle points to the intercooler, EGR cooler or fuel cooler, and with only 2.0 gallons in that loop, a small internal leak drains it fast. Pressure test the secondary system before you spend money on a tank.

Does the XDP XD215 cap fit a 2011-2014 truck?

It's listed for 2003-2016 6.0L, 6.4L and 6.7L Powerstroke trucks, which includes 2011-2014. Confirm against your truck with the fitment checker on the product page before ordering.

Do both bottles take the same coolant?

Yes. Ford specifies Motorcraft Orange VC-3-B mixed 50/50 with distilled water in both loops. The mistake to avoid is filling or pressure-testing the wrong system, which is easy to do with two bottles under the hood.

Is an aluminum degas tank worth it?

It's an upgrade, not a repair requirement. If you want to stay stock, a factory-style reservoir like the Dorman 603-277 is the route; check which bottle it replaces on the listing. If you'd rather run a fabricated tank, Mishimoto's aluminum primary degas tank is the option here.
