2011-2014 Ford 6.7L Powerstroke Starters

Gear-reduction starters for the 2011-2014 Ford F-250, F-350 and F-450 Super Duty with the 6.7L Powerstroke. Know this before you buy: a slow or long crank on this engine usually comes from the batteries, cables or glow plugs, so rule those out first and replace the starter only when the starter is the part that quit.

Starting the 2011-2014 Ford 6.7L Powerstroke

The 6.7L Powerstroke is a 16.2:1 compression V8 built on a compacted graphite iron block, cranked by a starter fed from two Group 65 batteries wired in parallel. A cold start needs strong battery voltage, clean cables and grounds, and working glow plugs. When one of those is weak, the starter usually takes blame it does not deserve.

What fails and why

Our research did not turn up a platform-specific starter failure pattern on the 2011-2014 6.7L. What does show up again and again is cranking complaints that trace to batteries, cables and glow plugs. Weak or mismatched batteries and voltage drop at the cables and grounds cause slow cranks, extended cranks and no-starts, especially in the cold. Glow plug and glow plug control module failures cause hard cold starts and can bring on a glow plug warning, and early 2011 trucks used two-piece glow plugs that are a known early-build issue. Test all of that before you pull the starter.

When a new starter makes sense

Once testing proves the starter is done, a heavy-duty gear-reduction replacement is a solid choice for a truck that earns its keep. Choose by year range, finish and brand. Put a new starter on a truck with tired batteries and you are back where you started, so load-test the batteries and replace them as a pair if they come up weak. Batteries typically last three to five years on these trucks.

What we carry

XDP MFG's XD254 HD gear-reduction starter comes in a wrinkle black finish and fits 2011-2016 6.7L trucks. Mean Green's 6696 gear-reduction starter covers 2011-2022 6.7L trucks. Each is listed for your 2011-2014 truck.

Fitment notes

Check the year range on each product: the XDP unit is listed through 2016 and the Mean Green unit through 2022. Product titles list fitment by engine and model year, so verify by VIN with the fitment checker, especially on chassis cab F-350, F-450 and F-550 trucks, which run their own calibration.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know it is really the starter?

Rule out the usual suspects first. Load-test both batteries, voltage-drop test the cables and grounds, and check the glow plugs and glow plug module if the complaint is a hard cold start. If all of that passes and the truck still cranks slowly or not at all, the starter is next in line.

Should I replace the batteries along with the starter?

Only if they test weak, but always test them. The two batteries should be replaced as a pair, never one at a time, and a fresh starter cannot make up for low battery voltage.

Will a starter from this page fit a 2015 or 2016 Super Duty?

The XDP starter is listed for 2011-2016 and the Mean Green starter for 2011-2022, so each covers 2015 and 2016 trucks. Check the range on the product page against your model year, and verify by VIN.
