2008-2010 Ford 6.4L Powerstroke Tuning

Tuning hardware for the 2008-2010 Ford F-250 and F-350 Super Duty with the 6.4L Powerstroke. Before you add power, know where this engine gives out: the stock turbos run out around 600 rwhp, but the factory head bolts stretch at about that same point, and tuned trucks on stock bolts lift head gaskets. Any tune on a road-registered truck has to keep every emissions system working.

Tuning on the 2008-2010 Ford 6.4L Powerstroke

From the factory, the 6.4L Powerstroke made 350 hp and 650 lb-ft in F-250 and F-350 pickups, and 325 hp and 600 lb-ft in F-450 and F-550 chassis cabs. Those ratings never changed across 2008, 2009 and 2010. The year-to-year differences are running changes, like the high-pressure fuel pump harness, calibration updates and recalls. Fuel goes through a Siemens VDO K16 pump to one common rail per bank at up to roughly 25,000 psi, and piezo injectors fire up to five times per cycle, including the post injections the engine uses for DPF regeneration. The emissions package is cooled EGR with two coolers in series, a diesel oxidation catalyst and a DPF with active regeneration. A tune changes how the ECM runs all of it, which is why the calibration matters as much as the power number.

What fails and why

Head gaskets. Tuned trucks without head studs lift head gaskets. On stock bolts at roughly 550 rwhp, that tends to happen between 80,000 and 100,000 miles, and the bolts themselves stretch around 600 rwhp. The signs are coolant being pushed out and white smoke.

Pistons and the torque converter. Aggressive fueling speeds up piston cracking and torque converter failure. Watch for smoke, blow-by and transmission shudder. When it shows up varies from truck to truck.

Where the stock parts top out. The stock turbos run out at about 600 rwhp. With turbo upgrades, the stock injectors and pump reach about 700 rwhp. The head bolts give out before the fuel system does.

Stock vs. tuned

Leaving the 6.4L on its factory calibration is a legitimate choice, and on a truck you depend on for work, it's the low-risk one. If you do tune, pair it with head studs, a built torque converter for the 5R110W automatic, and a monitor that shows exhaust gas temperature and transmission temperature. For a road-registered truck, only CARB EO-numbered tuning should be treated as emissions-legal, and you need to confirm the EO covers the 2008-2010 6.4L specifically. A custom tune that keeps every emissions system working still needs that same EO check before it goes on a street truck.

What we carry

This collection holds the hardware side of tuning. The HP Tuners MPVI4 is an interface that connects a laptop to the truck's diagnostic port so HP Tuners software can read, log and write calibrations. The SPE Motorsport 5-position switch bracket gives a 5-position switch a solid mount, and it's listed for 1999-2022 7.3L, 6.0L, 6.4L and 6.7L Powerstroke trucks. Browse the full tuners collection for the rest of what we carry in this category.

Fitment notes

Ford's running changes on these trucks included calibration updates and recalls, so have your tuner start from the calibration on your truck's ECM instead of going by model year alone. Automatic trucks run the 5R110W TorqShift five-speed and manual trucks run a ZF six-speed; the built-converter advice applies to the automatic. Verify EO coverage for the 2008-2010 6.4L before you buy any tune, and confirm interface coverage for your truck by VIN.

Frequently asked questions

How much power can a stock 6.4L handle?

The stock turbos run out around 600 rwhp, and with turbo upgrades the stock injectors and pump reach about 700 rwhp. The catch is the head bolts. They stretch around 600 rwhp, and tuned trucks on stock bolts at roughly 550 rwhp tend to lift head gaskets between 80,000 and 100,000 miles.

What should I install before I tune?

Head studs, a built torque converter if you have the automatic, and a monitor for EGT and transmission temperature. Studs and the converter address the head gasket and converter failures that aggressive tuning brings on this engine, and the monitor lets you see trouble coming.

Is a custom tune legal on a street-driven 6.4L?

Only CARB EO-numbered tuning should be treated as emissions-legal on a road-registered truck, and the EO has to cover the 2008-2010 6.4L. A custom file that keeps the EGR, DOC and DPF working is still not the same thing as an EO-numbered tune, so check before it goes on. Call us if you want help sorting it out.

Does the HP Tuners MPVI4 come with a tune?

No. The MPVI4 is the interface hardware. The calibration is a separate file, and that file is what has to meet the EO requirement on a street truck. Confirm HP Tuners' current coverage for your truck before you buy.
