2008-2010 Ford 6.4L Powerstroke Built Transmissions

These are complete, ready-to-install 5R110W TorqShift transmissions for 2008-2010 Ford F-250, F-350 and F-450 Super Duty trucks with the 6.4L Powerstroke. Before you order one, plan the rest of the job: a replacement transmission goes in with a new transmission cooler and a TCM relearn, or debris from the old failure can follow it into the new unit.

Complete transmissions for the 2008-2010 Ford 6.4L Powerstroke

The 5R110W is the five-speed TorqShift automatic Ford put behind the 6.0L and 6.4L from 2003 through 2010. On the 6.4L it has to manage up to 650 lb-ft in F-250 and F-350 pickups. Its stamped-steel, single-disc torque converter is where trouble usually starts: when it slips, it sheds debris that scores the pump and plugs the valve body and cooler. A complete unit is the answer once that damage has spread past the converter. For the rest of the drivetrain and engine, browse the Power Stroke collection.

When a complete transmission makes sense

Chronic heat burns the clutch packs and the forward and direct drums, and the main pump gear can shatter. The signs are rpm flare without acceleration, no forward or reverse, or a total loss of pressure. At that point the unit needs a full rebuild, and a complete transmission swaps in as one assembly instead of a teardown. Codes P0731 through P0735, which point to internal slip, are another reason to weigh a complete unit against a rebuild. Damage risk rises above about 200 F, so a truck that has been towing hot and has dark or burnt fluid is a likely candidate.

Stock-style vs. built

Remanufactured and built 5R110W units are sold with an upgraded torque converter and upgraded clutches, and that is the reason to buy one over a stock-spec unit. BD, for example, builds in tiers: Roadmaster for moderate use, and Tow & Track Master with a triple-disc converter for heavy work. If your 6.4L makes more than stock power, lean toward the heavier build, because the stock single-disc converter is the first part to let go once torque goes up. If the truck is a stock daily driver that tows now and then, a moderate-duty build fits the job. Check each listing to see which build and converter you are getting.

What we carry

BD Diesel offers the 1064492SM 5R110 transmission and converter package, listed for 2008-2010 Power Stroke trucks, so the converter comes with the unit. ATS Diesel Performance offers its 5R110 Transmission Package in a 2WD version and a 4WD version, both listed for 2003-2010 Power Stroke applications. Read each listing for exactly what comes in the box.

Fitment notes

Pick 2WD or 4WD to match your truck; the ATS packages are drivetrain-specific. These units are for the 5R110W automatic only. Trucks with the ZF six-speed manual need none of this, and nothing here fits a 2011 or newer Super Duty, which moved to the 6.7L and the 6R140. Budget for a new transmission cooler, since the old one holds debris and can void the warranty, and for a TCM relearn after install. Fill with the fluid on the dipstick or in the owner's guide; the factory spec is MERCON SP, and SP and LV must never be mixed. Verify by VIN before you order.

Frequently asked questions

Why do I need a new cooler with a complete transmission?

When the old transmission failed, converter and clutch debris went through the cooler. Reusing that cooler can push the debris straight into the new unit, and it can void the warranty. Replace the cooler as part of the install.

Does a replacement 5R110W need a relearn?

Yes. The 5R110W uses adaptive learning, and remanufactured or built units call for a TCM relearn after install. Plan on it with the install, the same as after a fluid service or a solenoid body replacement.

Is a built transmission worth it if I tow?

If you tow heavy or have added power, it is the safer choice. Built units come with an upgraded converter and clutches, and the heavier builds step up to a triple-disc converter. The stock single-disc converter is the first part to give out once torque and heat go up.
