2008-2010 Ford 6.4L Powerstroke Bumper Hitches

Receivers, ball mounts, pulling hitches and weight-distribution hardware for the 2008-2010 Ford F-250, F-350 and F-450 with the 6.4L Powerstroke. The factory frame receiver is standard on all of them, but its rating changes with the truck. On a single-rear-wheel F-250 or F-350 it's 6,000 lb weight-carrying and 12,500 lb with weight distribution.

The bumper hitch on the 2008-2010 Ford 6.4L Powerstroke

Ford put a frame-mounted receiver and 7-pin and 4-pin connectors on every Super Duty in these years. Its ratings from Ford's 2010 towing guide:

  • F-250 and F-350 SRW: 6,000 lb trailer and 600 lb tongue weight-carrying; 12,500 lb and 1,250 lb weight-distributing.
  • F-350 DRW with the 6.4L: 8,000 lb and 800 lb weight-carrying; 15,000 lb and 1,500 lb weight-distributing.
  • F-450: 8,000 lb and 800 lb weight-carrying; 16,000 lb and 1,600 lb weight-distributing.

The truck's own conventional rating applies too. In 2010 that was 12,500 lb on an SRW with the 3.31 or 3.55 axle, 15,000 lb on a DRW with the 3.73 and 16,000 lb on the F-450 with the 4.30. Whichever number is lowest, whether it's the receiver, the ball mount, the ball or the truck, is your limit.

What goes wrong and why

No pattern of receiver failures is documented on this generation. The common problem is overloading. Tongue weight runs 10 to 15 percent of the trailer, and it counts against your door-label GVWR and rear axle rating. A 12,000-lb equipment trailer puts 1,200 to 1,800 lb on the ball, well past the 600-lb weight-carrying limit of an SRW receiver. Tow it without weight distribution and you get an overloaded rear axle and poor braking.

Ball mount, pulling hitch or new receiver

Most owners only need the right ball mount. Pick a shank that matches your receiver opening and a drop that sets the trailer level. B&W's Tow & Stow mounts are adjustable, come in standard and pintle versions, and cover 2-in, 2.5-in and 3-in shanks. A triple ball mount lets one mount serve trailers with different coupler sizes. When the trailer is past the weight-carrying rating, B&W's WDHK4500 weight distribution hitch is the piece that gets you to the higher number; check its own rating on the product page. Big Hitch Products' adjustable pulling hitches are another option for 2-in and 2.5-in receivers. If you want to change the receiver itself, BHP makes a 2.5-in receiver for the stock bumper and a hidden 2.5-in receiver that tucks behind a roll pan.

What we carry

B&W Trailer Hitches supplies Tow & Stow adjustable ball mounts with drops from 3 in to 9 in, pintle and MultiPro/MultiFlex versions, the BMTT31004 triple tow ball mount, heavy duty ball mounts and the WDHK4500 weight distribution hitch. Big Hitch Products adds the BHP20015 behind-roll-pan hidden receiver, the BHP20017 stock-bumper receiver and the BHP2000 and BHP2001 adjustable pulling hitches. The rest of our towing hardware is on the main hitches page.

Fitment notes

The BHP receivers are listed for 1999-2016 Super Duty trucks with the 7.3L, 6.0L, 6.4L and 6.7L Powerstroke. Match every shank to your receiver opening; if a ball mount's shank is smaller than the opening, B&W reducer sleeves are in this truck's hitch accessories collection. The F-350 SRW sits about 3 in taller at the tailgate than DRW trucks, so the same trailer can need a different drop on each. Ford publishes SRW figures using the F-250; an F-350 SRW lands within 200 lb. Check the axle code on your door-jamb label and verify by VIN. Engine parts live under the Powerstroke hub.

Frequently asked questions

When does my 6.4L F-250 need a weight-distribution hitch?

Any time the trailer tops 6,000 lb or the tongue tops 600 lb. That's the factory receiver's weight-carrying limit on SRW F-250 and F-350 trucks. With weight distribution, the same receiver is rated to 12,500 lb with 1,250 lb on the tongue.

How do I pick the right drop?

Park on level ground with the truck loaded the way you'll tow. Measure from the ground to the top of the receiver opening, then to the bottom of the trailer coupler with the trailer level. The difference is the drop you need, so pick the Tow & Stow drop closest to it.

What is a behind-roll-pan hidden receiver?

It's a receiver for trucks running a roll pan instead of the factory rear bumper. The BHP20015 mounts its 2.5-in receiver behind the roll pan so the hitch stays hidden. Trucks keeping the stock bumper use the BHP20017 instead.
