Call or Text (352) 722-5295Steering stabilizers on the 2008-2010 Ford 6.4L Powerstroke
A steering stabilizer is a shock absorber mounted across the steering linkage. On these trucks the linkage runs from the frame-mounted recirculating-ball box, through the pitman arm and drag link, to the tie rods on the solid front axle. The stabilizer mount differs by year: on 2008-and-up Super Dutys the stock stabilizer mounts at the pitman arm, while 2005-2007 trucks need a lower mount or a dual kit. That matters when a listing covers both ranges.
Death wobble and what starts it
2008-2010 Super Dutys are known for death wobble, a violent front-end oscillation set off by a bump when steering or track-bar parts are worn or caster is too low. On these trucks the worn parts are usually the drag link and tie-rod ends, which wear faster under heavy loads, off-road use and leveled or lifted geometry, and the steering box, which develops internal play between the input shaft and the pitman arm. Bump steer, wander, misalignment and wobble are the warning signs. A stronger stabilizer on top of worn parts only damps the symptom.
Single damper or dual kit
A single damper replaces the factory unit, and the Bilstein B8 5100 on this page is built for that job on 4WD trucks. A dual kit puts two dampers on the linkage. BDS sizes theirs by lift height, with one kit for trucks lifted 0-2 inches and one for 2.5-9 inch lifts, plus a separate mounting kit for the taller setup. Larger tires speed up steering wear and put more leverage on the linkage, so a dual kit makes the most sense on a lifted truck running big tires. On a stock-height truck, the single damper is the direct replacement.
What we carry
- BDS Suspension dual steering stabilizer kits for 0-2 inch and 2.5-9 inch lifts, and the dual stabilizer mounting kit for 2.5-9 inch lifts, all for 4WD Super Dutys.
- Bilstein 24-196284 B8 5100 Series steering damper for 2008-2016 6.4L and 6.7L 4WD trucks.
Fitment notes
Everything here is titled for 4WD trucks. The BDS kits name the 6.7L in their titles but list 2005-2026 years, and the Bilstein covers 2008-2016, so both span the 6.4L years; still, verify by VIN with the fitment checker. Match the BDS kit to your actual lift height, and remember the mounting difference between 2005-2007 and 2008-and-up trucks. For the rest of the truck, see our Powerstroke parts.
Frequently asked questions
Will a new steering stabilizer stop death wobble on my 6.4L Super Duty?
Not on its own. Death wobble starts with worn steering or track-bar parts or low caster, and a stabilizer only damps the shake. Replace a worn drag link, tie-rod ends or a loose box first, then install the stabilizer.
Which BDS dual stabilizer kit do I need?
Go by lift height. BDS makes one kit for 0-2 inch lifts and one for 2.5-9 inch lifts, and the 2.5-9 inch setup has its own mounting kit. All of them are listed for 4WD trucks.
Where does the steering stabilizer mount on a 2008-2010 Super Duty?
On 2008-and-up trucks the stock stabilizer mounts at the pitman arm. Trucks from 2005-2007 need a lower mount or a dual kit, so parts for those years do not always transfer.
Does the Bilstein 5100 steering damper fit a 2WD truck?
The 24-196284 is listed for 2008-2016 6.4L and 6.7L 4WD trucks. If you have a 2WD truck, call us with your VIN before ordering.
