These Super Dutys use a recirculating-ball power steering gear bolted to the frame rail, with a factory ratio of 18:1. The gear turns the pitman arm, which drives the drag link and tie rods on the solid front axle. On 4x4 trucks that axle is a Dana 60 coil-spring monobeam, with the wide-track Super 60 under the F-450 and F-550. On 2008-and-up trucks the stock steering stabilizer mounts at the pitman arm. The pitman arm nut torques to 350 ft-lb, and the system runs Motorcraft MERCON V power steering fluid, part XT-5-QMC.
What wears out and why
On these trucks, wander and play come from worn gear boxes, drag links and tie-rod ends. The gear box wears internally and develops play between the input shaft and the pitman arm. You feel it as wander, a beat of delay before the truck reacts to the wheel, and general slop, and you may see fluid leaks at the box. High mileage, larger tires, plows and heavy loads speed that wear up. Tie-rod ends and the drag link wear too, especially under heavy loads, off-road use and leveled or lifted geometry, and they show up as wander, bump steer, misalignment and wobble. Worn steering parts combined with low caster are what feed death wobble, the violent front-end shake these 2008-2010 Super Dutys are known for after a bump.
Stock replacement vs. upgrade
Fix the worn part first, then add damping. If the box has play, a stabilizer will not take it out; the box needs replacing. XDP's Stock+ gearboxes on this page are new units, listed by year range and by single or dual rear wheels. If the front end shakes after bumps and the linkage checks out tight, look at caster: the BD Diesel cam caster adjuster kit lets you set caster on 2005-2010 Powerstroke trucks. Once the linkage and caster are right, a stabilizer damps what a bump sends up the steering. Lifted 4WD trucks have their own parts: a drop pitman arm and dual stabilizer kits sized by lift height.

Fitment notes
Build date beats model year for the gear box. A 2008 built before July 2007 uses the 2005-2007-style box, a 2010 built after March 2010 uses the 2011-2016-style box, and only trucks built between those dates use the mid-range 2008-2010 box. Dually trucks have their own XDP listing. The stabilizer kits, drop pitman arm and Bilstein damper are titled for 4WD trucks, and lift height decides which BDS kit you need. Stabilizer mounting differs by year: these trucks mount the stock unit at the pitman arm, while 2005-2007 trucks need a lower mount or dual kit, so don't assume a 2005-2007 setup carries over. A few listings name a different Powerstroke because they cover a range of Super Duty years; check the year range and drivetrain, and verify by VIN with the fitment checker. More 6.4L parts are under Powerstroke.
Frequently asked questions
Which steering box fits my 2008-2010 F-250 or F-350?
It depends on the build month, not the model year. Early 2008s built before July 2007 take the 2005-2007-style box, late 2010s built after March 2010 take the 2011-2016-style box, and everything in between takes the mid-range 2008-2010 box. Find the build date on the door-jamb label, then match it to the XDP listing, or call us with your VIN.
What causes death wobble on a 2008-2010 Super Duty?
It is set off by a bump when steering or track-bar parts are worn or the front end does not have enough caster. Worn gear boxes, drag links and tie-rod ends are the usual suspects on these trucks. Replace what is worn, set caster, then add a stabilizer to damp what is left.
Will a steering stabilizer fix wander?
No. A stabilizer damps feedback, but wander comes from play in the gear box, drag link or tie-rod ends. Fix those first. Bigger tires and lifts speed up steering wear, so lifted trucks on large tires deserve a close look at the linkage before any new damper goes on.
What power steering fluid does the 6.4L Super Duty use?
Ford specifies Motorcraft MERCON V, part XT-5-QMC. Check the label on any fluid you top off with for that spec. If you are topping off often, find the leak; fluid leaks at the gear box are one of the signs it is worn.
Does the XDP power steering pump come with a pulley?
Yes. The XD736 is listed as a new pump with the pulley and pipe for 2008-2010 6.4L trucks, so you are not swapping the old pulley over. Confirm fitment against your VIN on the product page.
