Call or Text (352) 722-5295Lift pumps on the 2008-2010 Ford 6.4L Powerstroke
Ford put the 6.4L Powerstroke lift pump inside the Horizontal Fuel Conditioning Module, or HFCM, on the driver-side frame rail. That housing also holds the 10-micron primary filter, the water separator and its drain, the water-in-fuel sensor, an inlet check valve and a thermal recirculation module that routes return fuel back into the filter below 80 F and is fully open at 50 F. The pump regulates to about 24 psi at the engine filter inlet. Fuel then passes a finer secondary filter on the engine and reaches the gear-driven Siemens K16, which feeds one rail per bank at up to about 24,650 psi.
What fails and why
The K16 has no internal bypass and relies entirely on clean fuel with good lubricity, so whatever the lift pump and HFCM let through becomes its problem. A failing lift pump starves the K16 and is a listed trigger for its failure. The water separator drain can also coagulate: water and diesel form a white, grease-like sludge that plugs the quarter-turn drain and lets water through to the K16 and the injectors. Expect a water-in-fuel warning, rust in the system, hard starts and later a P2269 code. The HFCM's plastic housing can also crack or its electrical parts can fail, which shows up as a fuel leak at the frame rail, water-in-fuel warnings and hard starting; that one is reported with less certainty than the drain problem.
When a K16 does fail, it contaminates the rails, lines and injectors, and replacing the pump alone invites a repeat failure. That is the real cost of a weak supply side.
Stock replacement vs. upgrade
Staying factory means a new HFCM assembly; the current Ford part is 9C3Z-9G282-A (Motorcraft PFB-117), which supersedes 8C3Z-9G282-A and PFB-95. The aftermarket route is a lift-pump and filtration system that adds finer filtration and water separation ahead of the K16. Whichever way you go, keep the water drained and the filters fresh. On the factory system that means draining the water separator every one to two weeks and changing both fuel filters on schedule, which is the single most effective K16 insurance. Ford's filter interval is 20,000 miles or 24 months in normal service and 10,000 miles or 400 hours in severe service, and the Motorcraft FD-4617 kit covers both filters.
What we carry
This collection holds the BD Diesel 1050319 Venom lift pump, sold with a filter and water separator and listed for 2008-2010 Power Stroke trucks. Read the product page for what comes in the box and how it mounts on your truck. To compare every lift pump we sell, see our lift pumps collection.
Fitment notes
The K16 and its piezo injectors are unique to the 6.4L; 6.0L HEUI and 6.7L Bosch fuel parts do not interchange, so pick a pump listed for 2008-2010. Before you replace any fuel part, check the HFCM filter bowl for white crystalline residue, which points to DEF contamination; if it is there, the whole fuel system is condemned. After filter or pump work, cycle the key three to five times to prime before starting. Verify by VIN or use the fitment checker.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know if my 6.4L lift pump is the problem?
Test before you buy. A sound diagnostic order is: pull all codes, check the fuel filter and lift pump, run an injector return-flow test, watch rail pressure live, measure supply pressure and volume to the high-pressure pump, test pump output, then inspect for leaks. A P0087 code can also come from a drifting rail pressure sensor on a truck with a healthy pump.
How often should I drain the HFCM water separator?
Every one to two weeks, and change both fuel filters on schedule. If the drain will not flow, suspect the white, grease-like sludge that forms when water and diesel mix in the separator.
Will an aftermarket lift pump protect my K16?
No part guarantees that. The documented benefit of an aftermarket lift-pump and filtration system is finer filtration and water separation ahead of the K16, and clean fuel with good lubricity is the preventive logic for a pump that depends on it. Draining water and changing filters still matter.
If my K16 already failed, is a new lift pump enough?
No. A K16 failure sends debris into the rails, lines and injectors, and both rails and the high-pressure lines must be flushed or replaced. Injector seal kits include new fuel lines. Fix the supply side as part of that repair, not instead of it.
