2008-2010 Ford 6.4L Powerstroke Up-Pipes

Up-pipes for the 2008-2010 Ford F-250, F-350 and F-450 Super Duty with the 6.4L Powerstroke. These pipes carry exhaust from the manifolds up to the high-pressure turbo, and their accordion bellows are a known crack point. On this engine the passenger-side pipe also carries the welded EGR crossover, so up-pipe work and the EGR cooler are tied together.

Up-pipes on the 2008-2010 Ford 6.4L Powerstroke

The up-pipes run from the exhaust manifold on each bank to the turbo inlet. On the 6.4L that inlet belongs to the 52 mm variable-geometry high-pressure turbo, the first turbo exhaust reaches in the BorgWarner series-sequential setup. The passenger-side pipe carries the welded EGR crossover and uses the EGR cooler as structural support, and replacement up-pipes are sold as a multi-piece set. Factory hardware is 10, 13, 15 and 18 mm, plus 5 mm fasteners at the firewall, and the manifold-side bolts torque to 18 ft-lb in a cross pattern.

What fails and why

The weak spot is the accordion bellows. They are the known crack point on these pipes, and a crack lets exhaust escape before it ever reaches the turbo. Installation is the other way these pipes go wrong: over-tightening the manifold-side hardware distorts the flanges, which is why the 18 ft-lb cross-pattern spec matters. Because the passenger pipe leans on the EGR cooler, look over the EGR cooler mounting while you're in there. Of the two EGR coolers on this engine, the horizontal one sees exhaust first and is the one that usually plugs or cracks.

Stock replacement vs. upgrade

An OEM replacement set puts back what Ford built. The upgrade style for this engine is heavy-wall T-304 stainless tubing with reinforced, interlock-lined bellows and machined flanges, sold as an OEM-style replacement that bolts in where the factory pipes were. Since the bellows are where these pipes crack, that's the part to compare. When you shop, look at the tubing material and wall, how the bellows are built, and whether the passenger pipe includes the EGR connection.

What we carry

  • Pacific Performance Engineering 316119508 OEM replacement up-pipes for the 2008-2010 6.4L.
  • MBRP FAL2761 Armor Lite 2-inch up-pipe assembly for the 2008-2010 6.4L.
  • BD Diesel 1043909 up-pipes with EGR connector for 2008-2010 Powerstroke.

Manifolds, gaskets and EGR seals for the same job are in the other 6.4L exhaust collections. Options for every truck are under exhaust, and the rest of the engine is under Powerstroke parts.

Fitment notes

Every set here is listed for 2008-2010 trucks only. The 2011 Super Duty was all-new with the 6.7L, and 2010-and-earlier exhaust parts don't carry into it. Check that the set you choose includes the passenger-side EGR connection, because that pipe ties into the EGR cooler. Plan on new gaskets at the manifold and EGR joints: EGR valve gaskets, O-rings and EGR cooler gaskets are in the exhaust accessories collection, and the manifold gasket set is with the manifolds. The 6.4L went into the F-250, F-350 and F-450 pickups and the F-450 and F-550 chassis cabs, so confirm your truck on the listing. Verify by VIN or use the fitment checker.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the passenger up-pipe connected to the EGR cooler?

On the 6.4L the EGR crossover is welded to the passenger-side up-pipe, and that pipe uses the EGR cooler as structural support. BD Diesel's 1043909 set is listed with the EGR connector, and the up-pipes and the EGR cooler are best inspected together.

What torque spec do 6.4L up-pipes use?

The manifold-side spec is 18 ft-lb, tightened in a cross pattern. Over-tightening distorts the flanges, which undoes the point of new pipes. Factory hardware is 10, 13, 15 and 18 mm, plus 5 mm fasteners at the firewall.

Should I buy OEM replacement or stainless upgrade up-pipes?

If you want the truck back to stock, an OEM replacement set like the PPE 316119508 does that. The upgrade style for this engine is heavy-wall T-304 stainless with reinforced, interlock-lined bellows and machined flanges, aimed at the bellows where these pipes crack. Compare the material and bellows construction on each listing before you choose.
