2008-2010 Ford 6.4L Powerstroke Downpipes

Downpipe parts for the 2008-2010 Ford F-250, F-350 and F-450 Super Duty with the 6.4L Powerstroke. The downpipe is the pipe between the low-pressure turbo and the diesel oxidation catalyst, and on this truck it is an OEM-style replacement part. The DOC and diesel particulate filter it feeds stay in place no matter which pipe you choose.

The downpipe on the 2008-2010 Ford 6.4L Powerstroke

The 6.4L runs BorgWarner series-sequential compound turbos. Exhaust comes from the manifolds through the up-pipes, spins the 52 mm variable-geometry high-pressure turbo, and then spins the 65 mm fixed-geometry low-pressure turbo. The downpipe picks up at the low-pressure turbo outlet and carries exhaust to the diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) and then the diesel particulate filter (DPF). This was the first Powerstroke with a DPF, and everything behind the downpipe is built around that filter: during active regeneration the engine post-injects fuel that burns in the DOC to heat the DPF and clear it.

What fails and why

The downpipe is not one of the 6.4L's documented trouble spots. The known mechanical weak points on this exhaust sit upstream of it, at the manifold flanges and the up-pipe bellows. The aftertreatment weak points sit downstream, at the DPF, its sensors and the DOC. That matters when you're chasing a problem: don't start with the downpipe. Confirm with a visual inspection and codes before ordering one. When the turbo-to-downpipe joint does come apart, plan on a new gasket.

Stock replacement vs. upgrade

On this truck the downpipe is replaced as an OEM-style part, so the choice is mostly about material, finish and fit. MBRP's 4-inch turbo downpipe comes in Armor Lite and Armor Pro versions and is listed for both the 2008-2010 6.4L and the 2011-2016 6.7L, so check the listing's options against your engine and year. If what you really want is more flow out the back, the documented compliant upgrade for the 6.4L is a true 4-inch DPF-back system that keeps the DOC and DPF and replaces the restrictive section behind the filter.

What we carry

  • MBRP Armor Lite / Pro 4-inch turbo downpipe, listed for 2008-2016 6.4L and 6.7L Powerstroke trucks.
  • Mahle F32789 turbocharger-to-downpipe gasket for the 2008-2010 6.4L.

Filter-back systems, gaskets and sensors for the rest of this exhaust are in the other 6.4L exhaust collections. Options for every truck are under exhaust, and the rest of the engine is under Powerstroke parts.

Fitment notes

These parts are for the 2008-2010 F-250 and F-350 Super Duty, the F-450 pickup, and F-450 and F-550 chassis cabs with the 6.4L. The 2011 Super Duty was all-new with the 6.7L, and 2010-and-earlier exhaust parts don't carry into it, so a downpipe pulled from a 2011-or-later truck is not a safe swap. The MBRP listing covers both engines, so confirm what you order matches your engine and year. The 6.4L has no DEF or SCR system, so nothing DEF-related sits between the turbo and the tailpipe. Verify by VIN or use the fitment checker on the product page.

Frequently asked questions

What does the downpipe connect to on a 6.4L Powerstroke?

It bolts to the outlet of the low-pressure turbo, the larger 65 mm fixed-geometry unit, and carries exhaust to the diesel oxidation catalyst and the DPF. The MAHLE F32789 gasket seals the turbo end of that joint.

Is the MBRP downpipe the same for the 6.4L and the 6.7L?

The listing covers 2008-2016 6.4L and 6.7L Powerstroke trucks, but those are different engines in different truck generations. Check the listing's options against your engine and year, and run it through the fitment checker before you order.

Do I need a new gasket when I replace the downpipe?

Plan on it. The MAHLE F32789 is made for the turbocharger-to-downpipe joint on the 2008-2010 6.4L, and a fresh gasket is the simple way to make sure that joint seals when it goes back together.
