Call or Text (352) 722-5295Coolant tanks on the 2008-2010 Ford 6.4L Powerstroke
Ford calls it a degas bottle for a reason. It is the deaeration point for the whole system, fed by a small port at the top of the vertical EGR cooler that also cools the EGR valve. Air that works its way through the 6.4L Powerstroke cooling system ends up here, and the cap on top seals the system. The system holds 7.66 gallons of Motorcraft Gold mixed 50/50 with distilled water, and the bottle is where you check and top off.
What fails and why
Weak degas caps are a listed cause of coolant loss on the 6.4L. Small hose and connection leaks do the same thing. Neither looks serious on its own, but the level drops, and low coolant turns into overheating under load, especially on long grades and when you tow. The bigger warning sign is bubbles in the degas bottle. That is the classic symptom of a cracked EGR cooler pushing exhaust into the coolant, and it is worth a pressure test before you start buying tanks.
Stock replacement vs. upgrade
If the factory-style bottle needs replacing, a direct replacement reservoir puts it back the way Ford built it. An aluminum degas tank is the upgrade route if you would rather not go back to a factory-style bottle. Either way, the recommended practice whenever the radiator is replaced is to pressure-test the system and put on a new degas cap and hoses, so a new cap belongs on any cooling job.
What we carry
Dorman has a factory-style coolant recovery tank reservoir. Mishimoto makes an aluminum degas tank for this truck. The XDP XD215 reservoir cap fits the degas bottle, and No Limit Fabrication offers a replacement coolant tank combined with a battery tray.
Fitment notes
The tanks here are listed for 2008-2010 6.4L trucks only. The XDP cap lists a wider range, 2003-2016 6.0L, 6.4L and 6.7L Powerstroke, per its title. The No Limit piece replaces the tank and battery tray together, so read its listing for what is included. Verify by VIN or use the fitment checker on the product page before you order.
Frequently asked questions
What does it mean when my 6.4L degas bottle has bubbles in it?
Bubbles in the degas bottle are the classic symptom of a cracked EGR cooler. The bottle is fed from the top of the vertical EGR cooler, so exhaust that gets into the coolant shows up there first. Pressure-test the system to confirm before you replace parts.
Can a bad degas cap cause coolant loss?
Yes. Weak degas caps are a listed cause of coolant loss on this engine, along with small hose and connection leaks. Low coolant then leads to overheating under load, which gets worse when you tow.
Should I replace the cap when I replace the radiator?
That is the recommended practice. Whenever a radiator goes in, pressure-test the system, replace the degas cap and hoses, and confirm the water pump is working. The XDP cap here is listed for 6.0L, 6.4L and 6.7L trucks, so it is an easy add to the order.
