Call or Text (352) 722-5295Coolant on the 2008-2010 Ford 6.4L Powerstroke
Ford's factory fill is Motorcraft VC-7-B Gold concentrate, mixed 50/50 with distilled water, 7.66 gallons in all. The first change comes at 100,000 miles or 6 years, and after that every 50,000 miles or 36 months. On the 6.4L Powerstroke, coolant leaves the front cover, passes through the horizontal EGR cooler and then the vertical EGR cooler, and comes back. A small port on top of the vertical cooler sends coolant past the EGR valve and up to the degas bottle.
Why coolant condition matters on this engine
When coolant breaks down, it restricts the oil cooler passages and the flow that feeds the EGR coolers. Owners report trouble around 50,000 to 75,000 miles: a check engine light, de-rate, high oil temps and eventually a failed EGR cooler. Running low does its own damage. Less commonly, low coolant leads to cavitation in the front cover behind the water pump, which shows up as milky oil, pinholes or coolant loss you can't trace. Diesel Hub recommends keeping the additive concentration and the flush schedule up to limit cavitation.
What we carry
Mishimoto Liquid Chill comes as pre-mixed yellow and purple coolant, a synthetic coolant with a pre-mixed version as well, and a radiator coolant additive. Hot Shot's Secret has gallon jugs of 150K-mile extended life green, 150,000-mile heavy duty extended life yellow and 750,000-mile heavy duty ultra long life red. Lucas Oil Super Coolant rounds it out.
Choosing and fitment notes
None of these are 6.4L-specific parts. They are coolants, and the factory spec for this engine is Motorcraft Gold. Read each product's specification and compatibility notes against what is in your truck before you top off or switch, and go by the label, not the color. Pre-mixed coolant pours straight in; concentrate gets mixed with distilled water. With 7.66 gallons in the system, a full refill takes more than one jug, so plan the order around the job. If you are not sure what is in the truck now, call us before you mix anything.
Frequently asked questions
How much coolant does a 2008-2010 6.4L Powerstroke hold?
The cooling system holds 7.66 gallons. Ford's spec is Motorcraft VC-7-B Gold concentrate mixed 50/50 with distilled water, so a complete refill takes a little over seven and a half gallons of mixed coolant.
When is the first coolant change due on a 6.4L?
Ford's schedule puts the first change at 100,000 miles or 6 years. After that, change it every 50,000 miles or 36 months. Between changes, Diesel Hub recommends keeping the additive concentration in check to limit cavitation.
Can coolant problems really take out an EGR cooler?
On this engine, yes. Coolant flows from the front cover through both EGR coolers, and degraded coolant restricts the oil cooler and the flow that feeds them. EGR cooler failure is one of the reported results, along with high oil temps and de-rate.
Can I mix different coolant colors in my 6.4L?
Go by the specification on the label, not the color. Check each product listing's compatibility notes against what is already in the system. If you can't confirm what is in there, call the shop before you mix.
