2008-2010 Ford 6.4L Powerstroke Starters

Replacement and gear-reduction starters, plus mounting hardware, for the 2008-2010 Ford Super Duty with the 6.4L Powerstroke. One thing to know before you pull the old starter: glow plugs, the glow plug control module, batteries, cables and grounds are behind most hard-start complaints on this engine, so rule them out first.

Starters on the 2008-2010 Ford 6.4L Powerstroke

The starter on a 6.4L Powerstroke draws from two batteries through the main cables and has to turn a V8 diesel with 17.5:1 compression. On a cold morning it gets help from one glow plug per cylinder, and Ford requires the block heater below -10 F. When the batteries, cables and glow plugs are healthy, the starter's job is simple: spin the engine fast enough to fire.

Rule out the usual suspects first

A slow crank, odd electrical faults and repeated alternator failures point to weak or sulfated batteries or poor grounds, and the two batteries need to be load-tested one at a time. A long crank when cold, white smoke at start-up and glow plug codes point to the glow plugs or GPCM. If the batteries test good, the grounds are clean, the glow system checks out and the starter is still the suspect, replace it.

Stock replacement vs. upgrade

A stock-style replacement starter is the straightforward swap for the factory unit. If your truck is stock and you just need it running again, that is the simple choice. The XDP XD256 HD gear-reduction starter is the step up for owners who want a heavy-duty unit, and the Mean Green 6675 is another aftermarket gear-reduction option. Either way, swap the mounting bolts while the starter is out instead of reusing old hardware.

What we carry

Alliant Power supplies the AP83007 replacement starter, listed for 2008-2010 6.4L trucks. For gear-reduction units, choose the XDP XD256 HD gear-reduction starter in wrinkle black or the Mean Green 6675 gear-reduction starter. The XDP XD532 starter bolt kit, in black phosphate, rounds out the job.

Fitment notes

The starters here are listed for 2008-2010 6.4L Powerstroke trucks, and the XD532 bolt kit is listed for 2003-2010 6.0L and 6.4L trucks. The 6.4L went into F-250, F-350 and F-450 pickups and F-450/F-550 chassis cabs. Verify by VIN before ordering, and do not assume a starter for the 2011-up 6.7L will carry back.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know it is the starter and not the batteries?

Test the batteries first. On the 6.4L, weak or sulfated batteries and poor grounds cause slow cranking and odd electrical faults, and each of the two batteries has to be load-tested on its own. Clean the grounds and check the cables before you condemn the starter.

Will a new starter fix a long crank on a cold morning?

Usually not. A long crank when cold, white smoke at start-up and glow plug codes point to the glow plugs or the glow plug control module. The 6.4L runs one glow plug per cylinder, and Motorcraft ZD15 is the listed plug.

Should I buy a stock-style replacement or an aftermarket starter?

If the truck is stock and you want it back to factory condition, the Alliant Power AP83007 replacement is the direct route. If you want an aftermarket unit, the XDP XD256 HD and the Mean Green 6675 are gear-reduction starters listed for the 6.4L, and XDP builds the XD256 as a heavy-duty unit. Either way, pick up the XD532 bolt kit so you are not reusing old hardware.
