2008-2010 Ford 6.4L Powerstroke Alternators

High-output alternators for the 2008-2010 Ford Super Duty with the 6.4L Powerstroke. Before you buy one, know this: weak batteries and poor grounds can lead to repeated alternator failures on this truck, so load-test both batteries, clean the grounds and check charging voltage under towing load first. A new alternator will not fix a bad battery.

Alternators on the 2008-2010 Ford 6.4L Powerstroke

The 6.4L Powerstroke left the factory with either a single alternator or an optional dual-alternator setup, feeding a pair of batteries. The alternator keeps both batteries charged and carries the electrical load once the engine is running. Weak or sulfated batteries and poor grounds on this truck show up as slow cranking, odd electrical faults and alternators that keep failing, so a dead-looking alternator is sometimes the victim, not the cause. That is why testing comes before buying.

Choosing an alternator

If testing points to the alternator, choose by how the truck is used. A high-output unit makes sense when you have added electrical load such as lights, a winch or an inverter, or when you want more charging margin than stock. Match the unit to your truck's single- or dual-alternator layout, because the brackets, belts and harnesses differ.

What we carry

From XDP you can choose the XD363 high-output alternator or the XD353 HD high-output alternator in a wrinkle-black finish. Mean Green offers the 1290 high-output alternator and the MG1290HD, a 300-amp high-output unit. Each is listed for 2008-2010 6.4L Powerstroke trucks. Check the product page for output ratings and which alternator layout it is built for.

Fitment notes

The 6.4L went into F-250, F-350 and F-450 Super Duty pickups plus F-450 and F-550 chassis cabs. Confirm whether your truck has one alternator or two before ordering, and verify by VIN if you are unsure. The 2011 Super Duty moved to the 6.7L, so do not assume a 2011-up alternator carries back to the 6.4L.

Frequently asked questions

Should I replace the batteries when I replace the alternator?

Test them first. Weak or sulfated batteries can lead to repeated alternator failures on this truck, and batteries here typically age out at four to six years. Load-test each battery on its own; if either one fails, replace it so the new alternator is not working against it.

Do I need a high-output alternator on a stock 6.4L?

Every alternator in this collection is a high-output design, so a stock truck gets extra margin either way. The added output matters most when you run lights, a winch, an inverter or other accessories. Just match it to your truck's single- or dual-alternator setup.

How do I check charging voltage the right way?

Load-test both batteries first and clean the grounds. Then check charging voltage with the truck working, ideally under towing load, not just at idle with everything off. That order rules out the simple causes before you spend money on a new alternator.
