2008-2010 Ford 6.4L Powerstroke Air Filters

Air filters and pre-filter wraps for the 2008-2010 Ford F-250 and F-350 Super Duty with the 6.4L Powerstroke. The factory airbox runs a Motorcraft FA-1886 dry element, and Ford's rule is to change it when the filter minder says so, not by mileage. This collection covers the aftermarket side: replacement elements and wraps for S&B, No Limit and Banks setups.

Air filters on the 2008-2010 Ford 6.4L Powerstroke

From the factory, the 6.4L breathes through a closed airbox with a Motorcraft FA-1886 dry element and a filter minder. Ford says to replace that element by the filter minder rather than on a fixed interval. Everything after the filter, starting with the low-pressure turbo of the compound pair, depends on that element doing its job. Once you swap to an aftermarket intake, the element changes too. S&B intakes use a washable element, and Banks intakes use a high-flow element.

Picking the right element

Start with what is under the hood. If you still run the factory box, the FA-1886 is the factory part number. If you run an S&B intake, the S&B KF-1051 replacement filter and WF-1022 filter wrap are both listed for the 2008-2010 6.4L. The No Limit Fabrication NLRF cold air intake filter is listed for 6.0L, 6.4L and 6.7L Power Stroke trucks and the 2018-2021 3.0L. The Banks 42650 pre-filter wrap is built for Banks Ram-Air filters PN 42158 and 42188, so it only belongs on a truck running one of those.

Washable elements and wraps

A dry element gets replaced when it is loaded. A washable element gets cleaned, re-oiled and reinstalled; S&B sells its Precision II cleaning and oil kit for that job, and you will find it in the intake accessories for this truck. A pre-filter wrap slips over the outside of the element as a first layer, and you still service the element underneath it. Neither style fixes a boost problem. Low boost and a hiss under load are also the symptoms of a cracked boot or coupler downstream, so look there before you blame the filter.

What we carry

S&B KF-1051 replacement filter and WF-1022 filter wrap, the No Limit Fabrication NLRF cold air intake filter, and the Banks Power 42650 pre-filter wrap. If you are shopping a complete cold air intake, start on our intakes page.

Fitment notes

The S&B parts here are listed for the 2008-2010 6.4L only. The No Limit NLRF title spans 2003-2026 6.0L, 6.4L and 6.7L plus the 2018-2021 3.0L, so confirm it matches the intake on your truck. The Banks wrap fits by filter part number, not by truck. If you bought the truck used and do not know what intake is on it, read the brand and part number off the filter or the intake housing before you order, or call the shop. More for this engine is on our Power Stroke page.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I change the air filter on a 6.4L?

Ford's answer for the factory FA-1886 is to replace it when the filter minder calls for it rather than at a set mileage. For an aftermarket element, follow the intake maker's service instructions.

Does a filter wrap replace the air filter?

No. A pre-filter wrap goes over the outside of the element as an extra layer, and the element still does the filtering. S&B lists its WF-1022 wrap for the 2008-2010 6.4L, and the Banks 42650 is sized for Banks Ram-Air filters PN 42158 and 42188.

Which filter do I need if my truck came with an aftermarket intake?

Match the intake, not just the truck. S&B intakes run washable elements and Banks intakes run high-flow elements, so read the brand and part number on the filter or housing and order the matching replacement. If you cannot find a number, call the shop for fitment help.
