Air comes in through a fender-side airbox, passes the filter and runs down the intake tube to the turbo compressor. Everything after the filter depends on that element doing its job: the turbo, the intercooler on 1999-2003 trucks and both plenums. Ford's schedule calls for a new filter every 30,000 miles or 30 months in normal service. Inspect it at each oil change, and in dusty conditions cut the interval to 15,000 miles or 12 months. Because the crankcase ventilation feeds into the intake, filter condition also decides how much oil ends up in your boots.
What fails and why
A neglected filter is the common problem, and on the 7.3L it costs you more than airflow. The extra restriction raises crankcase vacuum, which pulls oil through the ventilation system into the intake. You find oil in the Y-pipe boot and pooled in the valley, and the engine starts using oil. Early-1999 trucks, those built before December 1998, have a second weak spot: the factory airbox retention clips can break. Then air slips around the filter instead of through it, and dust shows up at the turbo inlet. If yours is an early 1999, look at those clips while the filter is out.
Stock replacement vs. upgrade
What you buy depends on the intake the truck runs. S&B offers its 7.3L replacement elements in cotton or dry media. Cotton elements are washed and re-oiled; dry elements are swapped when dirty. If your truck already wears an S&B or Banks Power cold air intake, reorder by the filter number that came with the kit. For dusty work, add a pre-filter wrap. It goes over the outside of the element and is sized to one specific filter, so match the numbers.
What we carry
S&B makes most of what is here. For 1994-1997 OBS trucks, the KF-1041 and KF-1050 replacement filters and the WF-1019 and WF-1031 filter wraps are listed. For 1998-2003 trucks, look at the KF-1006, KF-1042 and KF-1059 filters and the WF-1020 and WF-1040 wraps. Banks Power adds the 42650 pre-filter wrap for its Ram-Air intake filters, part numbers 42158 and 42188. Complete cold air intakes live in our diesel intakes collection, and the rest of the engine is under Powerstroke parts.
Fitment notes
S&B labels its Super Duty filters 1998-2003. Ford started building the 1999 Super Duty in January 1998, and some vendors list parts from that date, so if your truck has the Super Duty body, those are the listings to look at. The 1994-1997 OBS F-250 and F-350 take different filters and wraps. The Banks 42650 is listed for Powerstroke trucks from 1999 on and is made only for the Banks Ram-Air filter. On a 2003, confirm the truck has the 7.3L and not the 6.0L, because the 7.3L only ran into early 2003. When in doubt, verify by VIN.
Frequently asked questions
How often should I replace the air filter on a 7.3L Powerstroke?
Ford's interval is 30,000 miles or 30 months in normal driving. In dusty use, replace it at 15,000 miles or 12 months, and inspect it at every oil change either way.
Can a dirty air filter cause oil in my intake?
Yes. On the 7.3L a restrictive filter raises crankcase vacuum and pulls oil through the crankcase ventilation into the intake. The result is oil in the Y-pipe boot and the valley plus higher oil consumption, so check the filter before chasing a leak.
Why does the listing say 1998 when my truck is a 1999?
Ford began building the 1999 Super Duty in January 1998, so some vendors, S&B included, list Super Duty parts as 1998-2003. If you have a 1999-2003 Super Duty with the 7.3L, start with those listings.
Should I run cotton or dry media?
S&B offers its 7.3L replacement elements in both. Cotton gets cleaned and re-oiled, while dry media is replaced. In heavy dust, either one benefits from a pre-filter wrap and the shorter 15,000-mile interval.
