Oil filtration on the 2007.5-2010 Silverado LMM

The LMM takes 10 quarts with a filter change and the factory element is the ACDelco PF2232. The engine oil cooler is built into the driver-side radiator tank, so oil temperature and cooling system condition are tied together on these trucks. The particulate filter that arrived with this engine brought a low-ash CJ-4 oil requirement with it, which means the oil you pair with the filter matters as much as the filter you choose. Warm idle sits around 680 rpm, for reference if you are watching pressure at idle.

What fails and why

Filters are not the LMM's problem. Fuel dilution is. Active regeneration raises exhaust temperature by injecting fuel late in the cycle, some of that fuel sticks to the cylinder walls and ends up in the crankcase, and the result is an oil level that climbs, oil that smells like diesel and oil that is thinner than it should be. Above about 5 percent fuel by volume is considered excessive. Short-trip duty makes it worse. No filter fixes that; a shorter, measured interval does.

Stock replacement vs. upgrade

The ACDelco PF2232 is the factory element and a perfectly good filter for a stock truck on a sane interval. PPE's Micropure XR is the performance element in this collection, and PPE also lists an oil centrifuge filtration kit for 2006-2010 Duramax if you want filtration beyond what a single spin-on provides, plus a threaded 13/16 in-16 UNF oil filter adapter. Whichever route you take, an oil analysis is what tells you how long your oil is actually lasting before dilution crosses 5 percent.

Send a sample out for analysis and shorten the interval to match how the truck is actually driven.
