2007.5-2010 Chevy Duramax LMM Cooling System Parts

Cooling parts for the 2007.5-2010 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD and 3500HD with the 6.6L LMM Duramax. GM built this truck with more cooling capacity than the LBZ before it, because the DPF and its regens add heat. Most LMM cooling work starts with the fan clutch, the water pump and a clogged cooling stack, not the radiator.

Cooling on the 2007.5-2010 Silverado HD LMM

The LMM arrived mid-2007 in the new GMT900 heavy-duty body rated at 365 hp and 660 lb-ft, and it was the first Duramax with a diesel particulate filter. GM gave it an increased-capacity cooling system and cooled EGR, though the larger EGR cooler itself dates back to the LBZ. Two more loads ride on the same stack: a heavy-duty air-to-oil engine oil cooler built into the driver side of the radiator tank, and a standard auxiliary external transmission oil cooler for the Allison 1000. Air gets pulled through the intercooler, the A/C condenser and the radiator by a mechanical fan clutch, so fan speed is a reaction to how hot the air coming through that stack already is. The order sheet also offered a radiator grille and front bumper cover opening set for 3500HD diesels and an optional engine block heater, so a used truck may show up with either already fitted.

What fails and why

Start at the water pump. As it ages and heat-cycles it seeps at the weep hole and leaves crusty residue behind, which shows up as intermittent low coolant and a little temp creep long before anything dramatic happens. The fan clutch is the other weak link, and owners commonly report it locking up only after the engine is already hotter than they would like, because engagement is driven by air temperature through the cooling stack rather than coolant temperature directly. Debris packed between the intercooler and the radiator makes that worse, since it blocks airflow at exactly the point where the clutch senses heat, which is why a Silverado can overheat pulling a trailer and act perfectly normal empty. Coolant that disappears with no puddle under the truck often points at the EGR cooler leaking internally into the intake or exhaust, usually with white smoke and rough cold starts along with it. Sustained temp climb under tow is worth taking seriously: pressure test the system, verify the fan and clutch, clean the stack and fix leaks early. Overheating is the number one cause of a blown head gasket, and once that happens the cooling system stays pressurized and keeps pushing coolant out.

Stock replacement vs. upgrade

For a truck that simply runs hot, the honest fix is usually OEM-style parts, not bigger parts. The fan clutch, the thermostats and the water pump are the usual trio replaced for towing overheats, and doing all three together restores the two control points that rely on mechanical actuation. Put fresh coolant in while the system is drained. Clean the gap between the intercooler and the radiator before you buy a radiator, because a plugged stack reads exactly like a tired radiator from the driver's seat. Upgrades earn their place in two spots. A direct-fit replacement radiator with more core is reasonable on a truck that tows at weight in Florida heat, and silicone hose kits replace molded rubber that has been heat-cycling for well over a decade. Dropping charge-air temperature with intercooler work also takes heat stress off a truck that regens often.

What we carry

Water pumps come from Dayco in pump-only and with-housing versions, ACDelco, Alliant Power with the housing sold separately, and XDP, so you can reuse a good housing or replace the whole assembly. Hose work is covered by Dayco molded heater hose and curved upper, lower and heater-outlet radiator hoses, Dorman heater hose assemblies, metal heater hose connectors, inlet hose tee connectors and an upper coolant thermostat housing, plus PPE silicone upper and lower radiator hose kits, silicone coolant hoses, stainless coolant tubes and a large-diameter turbo coolant hose. Dorman also has the coolant recovery tank reservoir. Wehrli Custom Fabrication builds billet coolant tank caps and complete coolant tank kits, and Merchant Automotive has the coolant tank float switch. XDP covers the engine coolant temperature sensor with pigtail, a radiator coolant drain pipe and a direct-fit replacement radiator. Coolant itself is here from ACDelco in Dex-Cool 50/50, Mishimoto and Hot Shot's Secret, with additional cooling parts from Mahle. The rest of the Duramax catalog is one click away.

Fitment notes

The first thing to sort out is which 2007 you have. The LMM only came in the new GMT900 body, which is why these pages start at 2007.5; a 2007 Classic is the older GMT800 truck with the LBZ and its own parts list. From there, most water pump and thermostat parts are shared with the LBZ across 2006-2010 in catalogs, so a listing written 2006-2016 is not a mistake, but confirm by engine code before ordering. The 2011 trucks are a hard stop: the LML replaced the LMM with a different injection and emissions layout, so do not assume a 2011 part number carries back. Hoses and tanks are not affected by cab and bed length, but the 3500HD was sold single and dual rear wheel, and box-delete and chassis cab versions were rated below the 365 hp pickup calibration, so bracketry can differ. Use the fitment checker on each product page, and verify by VIN if you are not certain what you are looking at.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my Silverado run hot towing a trailer but stay cool empty?

That pattern usually comes down to airflow, not coolant. Debris packed between the intercooler and the radiator blocks air right where the fan clutch senses heat, so the fan goes to full speed late, and owners commonly report the clutch locking up only after the engine is hotter than they want. Pull the stack apart and clean it, verify the fan and clutch, and pressure test the system before you spend money on a radiator.

I keep losing coolant but there is no puddle. What is leaking?

There are two suspects specific to this engine. An EGR cooler leaking internally dumps coolant into the intake or exhaust, so it burns off instead of hitting the ground, usually with white smoke and a rough cold start. A head gasket pushed out by an earlier overheat does the same thing and leaves the system firm after shutdown. A water pump seeping at the weep hole is the easy one to spot, because it leaves crusty residue behind. Pressure test cold and hot before you start replacing parts.

Do I have to replace the fan clutch when I replace the water pump?

You do not have to, but the fan clutch, the thermostats and the water pump are the trio that gets replaced for towing overheats, and they come apart in the same job. Doing them together restores both mechanical control points this cooling system depends on. Replace the coolant at the same time rather than reusing what drained out.

Will an LBZ water pump fit my LMM?

In most catalogs the water pump and thermostat parts are shared across the 2006-2010 trucks, which is why you see listings written 2006-2016. That is a real catalog grouping, not a guess. Confirm by engine code before you order, since the 2007 model year includes both the Classic body with the LBZ and the new body with the LMM.
