Call or Text (352) 722-5295The steering box on the 2019-2024 Ram 6.7L Cummins
Ram fits the fifth-gen 2500/3500 with a hydraulic-assist, recirculating-ball steering gear. The box takes input from the steering column, adds hydraulic assist, and turns the pitman arm through its sector shaft; from there the drag link and tie rod steer the solid front axle. The assist pressure comes from the power steering pump, and on the 6.7L Cummins trucks that same pump also drives the hydro-boost brake booster. Box, pump and fluid work as one system, and your brakes share the pump.
Signs the box is the problem
Steering gears on these trucks wear with mileage. Box symptoms are excessive play at the gear, fluid leaks at the sector shaft or input shaft seals, binding or memory steer, and popping on turns. Wander, clunks over bumps and a violent shimmy above about 45 mph after a bump are a different list, more often the front track bar bushings or the ball joints. A dry-park test separates the two: with someone rocking the wheel, watch each joint for play, starting with the track bar. A new box on a worn track bar will still wander.
Stock replacement vs. upgrade
The XDP Stock+ gearboxes here are sold new and built to replace the factory box, which suits most trucks at stock height on factory tires once the box is confirmed bad. If the truck is lifted or runs large, heavy tires, tighten the rest of the front end in the same job; lifts past about 2.5 inches also need an adjustable or relocated track bar to re-center the axle. When the old box comes out for a leak, inspect the sector-shaft splines and seal area, since the pitman arm moves over to the new gear.
What we carry
XDP Stock+ power steering gearboxes, sold new. The XD743 is listed for 2020-2022 6.7L Cummins trucks. The XD752 is listed for 6.7L Cummins trucks with 4WD across a year range that includes 2019-2024. Which one suits your truck comes down to year, drivetrain and steering options, covered below.
Fitment notes
Steering boxes are the least forgiving part in the steering section. On 2019-and-newer Rams the gear varies by engine (6.7L Cummins versus 6.4L Hemi), by 2WD or 4WD, by pickup versus chassis cab, and by options such as LaneSense or adaptive steering. A standard box will not work on a truck with those features. Check the year range on the listing, check your drivetrain, check your options on the window sticker or build sheet, and verify by VIN before you order. If anything looks borderline, call the shop with your VIN.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know if my Ram's steering box is bad?
Box trouble shows up as excessive play at the gear, leaks at the sector or input shaft seals, binding or memory steer, and popping on turns, mostly at high mileage. If the complaint is wander or a shimmy after bumps, check the track bar and ball joints first with a dry-park test.
Does LaneSense or adaptive steering change which box I need?
Yes. On 2019-and-newer Ram 2500/3500 trucks, gears for LaneSense or adaptive steering are different parts, and a standard box will not work on those trucks. Confirm your options before you order.
Which XDP box fits my 2019-2024 Ram?
Start with the listings: the XD743 is listed for 2020-2022 6.7L Cummins trucks, and the XD752 for 4WD 6.7L Cummins trucks. Match your year and drivetrain, then confirm your steering options. The fitment checker on the product page, or a call with your VIN, settles anything in between.
