Charging and starting parts on the 2019-2024 Ram 6.7L Cummins

The starting system on the 6.7L Cummins is built around two Group 65, 730 CCA batteries and an intake grid heater that draws on the order of 200 amps on a cold start. The alternator is 180 amps on base trucks and 220 amps on Laramie, Longhorn and Limited diesels, with dual 220-amp alternators optional. The small parts matter in this circuit. On 2019-2021 trucks the serpentine belt is Mopar 5281816AA for a single alternator or 5281817AA for dual alternators, the belt tensioner is a Gates 38285, and the grid heater relay is the part named in the 2021-2023 recall.

Check these before you buy parts

Three things to rule out. First, recall 23V-060 (FCA 13A), which supersedes 21V-163 and 21V-798, covers a grid heater relay on 2021-2023 Ram 2500, 3500 and cab chassis trucks that can short out with a fire risk, ignition on or off. Signs include a check-engine light or a melted relay. Second, recall 22V-642 covers 2022 ECMs with a misaligned capacitor that can cause an internal loss of communication: a no-start, a stall or U-codes. Third, slow cranking. There is no documented starter failure pattern on this generation, and slow cranking is more often a battery or cable issue. Test both batteries before you replace anything else.
