Call or Text (352) 722-5295Alternators on the 2019-2024 Ram 6.7L Cummins
Ram rated the base alternator at 180 amps on both the Hemi and the 6.7L Cummins. Diesel Laramie, Longhorn and Limited trucks get a 220-amp unit, and a dual 220-amp setup was optional on the Cummins. That is a lot of charging capacity, and the diesel uses it. The intake grid heater draws on the order of 200 amps on cold starts. The two Group 65, 730 CCA batteries need to be brought back up afterward. Diesel models also carry in-duct electric cabin heater elements to speed warm-up, and the truck offers up to three 115-volt, 400-watt outlets plus USB ports. Every one of those loads runs back to the alternator.
Stock output or high output
Our research does not document an alternator failure pattern for this generation, so this page is about matching output to the way you use the truck, not chasing a known defect. A stock-output replacement suits a truck running factory equipment. A high-output unit makes sense when you add work lights, run tools or appliances off the outlets, or spend long hours idling with the electric cab heat on. Ram itself offered a second 220-amp alternator on this diesel, which shows how much current a working truck can call for. One caution: a bigger alternator does not fix weak batteries. If the batteries are tired, replace both as a matched pair of Group 65 AGM batteries.
What we carry
Mean Green builds the MG1391SHD, rated at 375 amps, and the 1391 high-output unit. XDP MFG offers the XD354 HD high-output alternator in a wrinkle black finish. All of them are listed for 6.7L Cummins trucks going back to 2007.5.
Fitment notes
Single- and dual-alternator trucks use different belts, bracketry and alternator part numbers. On 2019-2021 trucks, the serpentine belt is Mopar 5281816AA with one alternator and 5281817AA with two, and the tensioner is a Gates 38285. Check your option code before you order. The Mean Green units are titled through 2023 and the XDP through 2024, so 2024 owners should run the fitment checker. Verify by VIN.
Frequently asked questions
How many amps does the stock alternator make on a 2019-2024 Ram 6.7L?
180 amps on base trucks. Laramie, Longhorn and Limited diesels came with 220 amps, and a dual 220-amp setup was optional on the Cummins. Your option code or VIN tells you which one you have.
Will a high-output alternator fit a truck with dual alternators?
Do not assume it will. Dual-alternator trucks use different bracketry and a different belt (5281817AA), and the alternator part numbers differ from single-alternator trucks. Check the product's fitment notes against your option code, or call the shop before you order.
Should I replace my batteries when I upgrade the alternator?
If they are weak, yes. An alternator recharges batteries; it does not bring a tired pair back. The diesel runs two Group 65 batteries, so replace both together as a matched pair.
