2018-2023 Ram 1500 3.0L EcoDiesel Steering Parts

This page covers steering parts and fluids listed for the 2018-2023 Ram 1500 with the 3.0L EcoDiesel. The first thing to know: every EcoDiesel Ram in this range steers through electric power steering. There is no belt-driven pump, no lines and no hydraulic fluid in the system, so steering service on this truck is front-end parts and alignment, not fluid.

Steering on the 2018-2023 Ram 1500 3.0L EcoDiesel

Ram moved the 1500 to electric power steering with the 2013 refresh of the DS body, the same update that brought the 8-speed automatic and air suspension. The 2018 Ram 1500 and the 2019 Ram 1500 Classic carry it on the DS body with the second-generation EcoDiesel, and the fifth-generation DT body that got the third-generation EcoDiesel for 2020 kept it. The practical result for you: the V6 does not turn a steering pump, and there are no lines to leak or fluid to change. When steering work comes up on this platform, it is tie rods, ball joints and alignment, especially after the truck has been leveled.

What fails and why

There is no known steering failure pattern specific to the EcoDiesel. What shows up on these trucks are body-wide recalls that have nothing to do with the engine. On 2023 DT trucks, Ram recalled the steering column control module twice: 23V799 for high-beam and turn-signal malfunctions, and 24V729 for turn signals that do not self-cancel correctly. Neither recall is a loss-of-steering-assist problem. The 2020 wiper linkage recall, 20V208, shows up in the same truck-wide recall lists and is not engine specific either. Run your VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup or have a Ram dealer check for open campaigns before you buy parts for a column problem on a 2023.

Stock replacement vs. upgrade

Because the system has no pump, lines or fluid, there is nothing hydraulic to upgrade. Stock replacement on this truck means matching front-end wear parts to your body style, DS or DT. The upgrade conversation usually starts with ride height: once you level or lift an EcoDiesel, the tie rods, ball joints and alignment are the steering items to look at. Recall work is not an upgrade decision. If a 2023 truck has an open column-module campaign, that is a dealer repair.

What we carry

This collection currently lists Lucas Oil 10823 Power Steering Fluid. Be clear about what it is before it goes in the cart. Power steering fluid is for hydraulic systems, and the EcoDiesel's electric steering takes none. It makes sense if you also keep a truck or piece of equipment with hydraulic steering and want a bottle on the shelf. Check the product page for the applications Lucas lists. If you are hunting for front-end parts for your EcoDiesel, call the shop for free fitment help.

Fitment notes

Steering gear and column modules are body-specific. The 2018 Ram 1500 and 2019 Ram 1500 Classic share the DS body; 2020-2023 EcoDiesel trucks are the DT body, and steering gear and column modules do not cross between them. The 2023 column-module recalls apply only to DT trucks. The all-new 2019 Ram 1500 was not offered with a diesel, so a 2019 EcoDiesel is always a Classic. For 2023, the EcoDiesel was sold only as a Crew Cab 4x4. Verify by VIN before you order.

Frequently asked questions

Does my EcoDiesel Ram need power steering fluid?

No. The 2018-2023 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel uses electric power steering, so there is no pump, no lines and no fluid to service. If a shop quotes you a power steering flush on this truck, ask where the fluid goes.

Are the 2023 steering column recalls about losing steering assist?

No. Recall 23V799 covers high-beam and turn-signal malfunctions, and 24V729 covers turn signals that do not self-cancel properly. Both involve the steering column control module on 2023 DT trucks. A Ram dealer performs the recall work.

I just leveled my EcoDiesel. Which steering parts should I check?

On this platform, steering work after leveling comes down to tie rods, ball joints and a fresh alignment. There is no pump or line routing to adjust because the system is electric. Book the alignment once the leveling work is finished.

Will steering parts from a 2019 Ram 1500 Classic fit my 2021 EcoDiesel?

Do not count on it. The 2019 Classic is the older DS body and the 2021 is the DT body, and steering gear and column modules are specific to each. Match parts to your body style and confirm by VIN.
