Call or Text (352) 722-5295The valve covers on the 2018-2023 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel
The EcoDiesel is a 60-degree V6 with heat-treated aluminum cylinder heads, dual overhead cams and four valves per cylinder. The valve covers close off the top of those heads, and the crankcase vent path exits from the valve-cover area into the intake. The factory system returns oil and water vapor to the intake, where it mixes with hot EGR gas. That is why owners find an oil film in the intake tract and intercooler, and why carbon builds in the intercooler, intake manifold and valves over time.
The 2018 Ram 1500 and the 2019 Ram 1500 Classic carry the second-generation engine. The 2020-2023 Ram 1500 carries the third generation, which Ram says is about 80% new parts, including new cylinder-head intake ports.
What to know before you blame the valve cover
We do not have a documented valve-cover failure pattern for the EcoDiesel to point to, so we will not hand you a symptom list. What matters here is telling normal from abnormal. Oil film in the intake and intercooler is expected on this design. Oil on the outside of the engine around the cover is a separate question, and the grommets and seals at the cover are what keep that joint tight once the cover has been off. Owners also report intake-manifold replacements with codes P200A and P200B and heavy soot on the swirl valves, which is an intake problem, not a valve-cover one.
Stock replacement vs. upgrade
Valve cover grommets are a sealing part, and the only goal is a correct fit. Any time the cover comes off, whether for valve-train work, head work or access to the top of the engine, new grommets mean you are not reusing rubber that has already been compressed and heat-cycled. There is no performance version of this part.
What we carry
MAHLE GS34053 valve cover grommets, listed for 2014-2019 EcoDiesel engines.
Fitment notes
The GS34053 is listed for 2014-2019, which covers the 2018 Ram 1500 and the 2019 Ram 1500 Classic with the second-generation engine. It is not listed for the 2020-2023 truck. Ram changed the cylinder-head intake ports and much more for the third generation, so a Gen 2 valve-cover part is not a safe assumption on a 2020 or newer engine. Any 2019 EcoDiesel is a Classic, because the redesigned 2019 Ram 1500 had no diesel. Verify by VIN.
Frequently asked questions
Is oil in my EcoDiesel intercooler a sign of a bad valve cover seal?
Not by itself. The factory crankcase vent path leaves the valve-cover area and feeds the intake, so an oil film in the intake tract and intercooler is normal for this design. Oil on the outside of the engine is a separate question.
Do these grommets fit a 2021 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel?
The MAHLE GS34053 is listed for 2014-2019 only, which is the second-generation engine. The 2020-2023 engine is a third-generation design with about 80% new parts, so check the part number for your truck with the fitment checker or call us.
Why does carbon build up in the EcoDiesel intake?
The crankcase ventilation returns oil and water vapor to the intake, where it mixes with hot EGR gas. That mix builds carbon in the intercooler, intake manifold and valves. Owners also report intake-manifold replacements with codes P200A and P200B and heavy soot on the swirl valves.
