Coolant tanks on the 2018-2023 Ram 1500 3.0L EcoDiesel

The recovery tank is where you check and top off coolant, so it is often where a cooling problem first gets noticed. On the EcoDiesel that coolant serves the radiator, the engine, a cooled EGR system that has been on the engine since 2014, and a water-cooled turbo. The 2018 Ram 1500 and 2019 Classic carry the second-generation engine. The 2020-2023 trucks carry the third generation, which Ram said used 80% new parts.

What fails and why

A tank gets replaced when it is cracked, leaking or damaged. Before you blame the tank for a dropping level, find out where the coolant is actually going. On 2014-2019 engines the documented cooling failure is the EGR cooler: it can crack and let vaporized coolant into the EGR system, where it can combust in the intake manifold. NHTSA recall 19V757 covers it. Unexplained coolant loss and white smoke from the engine bay point there, not at the tank.

Stock replacement vs. upgrade

The recovery tank is a stock-replacement part, and the Dorman 603-833 is built as a replacement coolant recovery tank reservoir. It is the right fix when the factory tank is leaking or damaged. Pair it with fresh coolant that matches your owner's manual specification, and plan the refill: one owner who flushed a third-generation truck at 80,000 miles reported that the job required a pressure/vacuum fill kit.

Fitment notes

Go by the year range in the title. The Dorman 603-833 is listed for 2014-2019, which covers the 2018 Ram 1500 and the 2019 Ram 1500 Classic. Every 2019 EcoDiesel is a Classic, because the new-body 2019 Ram 1500 was not offered with a diesel. The 2020-2023 truck is a different body and a substantially different engine, so do not assume a 2018-2019 part carries over without a part-number check. This is a Ram 1500 part; the EcoDiesel was never offered in the 2500 or 3500. Verify by VIN.

Frequently asked questions

Will the Dorman 603-833 fit my 2022 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel?

It is listed for 2014-2019 trucks, not 2020-2023. The 2020-2023 Ram 1500 is the newer body with the third-generation engine, so check your factory part number or call us with your VIN before ordering.

My coolant tank level keeps dropping. Is the tank bad?

Check the tank for cracks and wet spots first. On a 2018 Ram 1500 or 2019 Classic, coolant loss with no visible leak and white smoke from the engine bay matches the EGR cooler failure covered by recall 19V757. Check the recall status by VIN before you replace parts.

Does this tank fit a Ram 2500 or 3500?

No. The 3.0L EcoDiesel was a Ram 1500 engine only, and this tank is listed for the 2014-2019 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel. Heavy-duty Rams use different engines.
