Call or Text (352) 722-5295Brakes on the 2018-2023 Ram 1500 3.0L EcoDiesel
Every EcoDiesel Ram 1500 in this range stops on four-wheel disc brakes with ABS and electronic stability control. The 2018 Ram 1500 and the 2019 Ram 1500 Classic share the older DS body. The 2020-2023 trucks are the fifth-generation DT, and the 2021 spec sheet lists 15-inch rotors front and rear. What the diesel changes is how hard the brakes work on a long grade. In TFL's Ike Gauntlet test at 8,700 lb, the 2020 EcoDiesel needed four brake applications on the descent versus five for the Hemi, because engine braking and the 8-speed automatic carried part of the load.
What fails and why
The documented brake problems on these trucks are recalls, not wear patterns, and none of them are specific to the diesel. Recall 21V037 covers 2021 Ram 1500 trucks built with a missing brake-pedal retaining clip at the master cylinder, which creates a risk of the pedal disconnecting. Recall 24V653 covers 2021-2023 Ram 1500 trucks whose ABS control module software can shut off electronic stability control; you see an ESC warning and the system stops working. Both are recall repairs, so run your VIN through a recall lookup before you spend money on parts.
Beyond the recalls, it comes down to normal wear. One Gen 3 owner reports replacing pads and rotors at about 70,000 miles and changing brake fluid every two years. That is one truck's history, not a schedule. Your towing, your terrain and the way you drive decide your numbers.
Stock replacement vs. upgrade
A truck that commutes and hauls light does fine with factory-spec parts and fresh fluid. On the DT, the factory 15-inch rotors are the baseline, and the integrated trailer brake controller is part of the tow package. If you tow close to the 12,560-lb rating, heavier-duty pads and rotors are the sensible step up. Either way, a brake job finishes the same way: clean rotors and hardware, a bled system and a reservoir filled with the fluid grade your truck calls for. That last part is what this collection covers.
What we carry
Everything on this page comes from Lucas Oil and handles the fluid and cleaning side of brake work:
- Lucas Oil 10825 DOT 3 Synthetic Brake Fluid for systems that call for DOT 3.
- Lucas Oil 10827 DOT 4 Synthetic Brake Fluid for systems that call for DOT 4.
- Lucas Oil 10906 Non-Chlorinated Brake Parts Cleaner for rotors, calipers, brackets and hardware during pad and rotor service.
- Lucas Oil 10799 Contact Cleaner for electrical connectors you unplug during brake work, such as wheel-speed sensor plugs.
Fitment notes
DS brake parts (2018 Ram 1500, 2019 Ram 1500 Classic) and DT brake parts (2020-2023) do not interchange, and the 15-inch rotor size applies to the DT only. A 2019 EcoDiesel is always the Classic, because the new DT body was not offered with a diesel that year. The fluids and cleaners here are not tied to body style, but the fluid has to match the DOT rating in your owner's manual or on the reservoir cap. Verify any hard parts by VIN, and use the fitment checker on the product page.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a brake problem specific to the EcoDiesel?
No. The documented issues are truck-wide: the 21V037 pedal-clip recall on 2021 models and the 24V653 ABS software recall on 2021-2023 models. Neither one involves the diesel engine. Check your VIN for open recalls before buying parts.
Should I buy DOT 3 or DOT 4 fluid for my Ram 1500?
Use the rating your owner's manual or reservoir cap specifies. We stock both Lucas Oil synthetic grades so you can match it. If the cap is unreadable, call the shop with your VIN and we will look it up.
Do 2019 EcoDiesel brake parts fit a 2020 truck?
No. The 2019 EcoDiesel is the Ram 1500 Classic on the DS body, and the 2020 is the new DT body. Brake parts between the two do not interchange, so order by model year and body, and confirm with your VIN.
Does the EcoDiesel help the brakes when towing downhill?
It helps. In TFL's Ike Gauntlet test at 8,700 lb, the 2020 EcoDiesel needed four brake applications on the descent, one fewer than the Hemi, thanks to engine braking and the 8-speed. That does not replace good pads, sound rotors and fresh fluid when you tow heavy.
My ESC warning is on. Do I need brake parts?
Not necessarily. On 2021-2023 Ram 1500 trucks, recall 24V653 addresses ABS control module software that can disable electronic stability control. Have the recall checked first. If the truck has no open recall, diagnose the fault before you replace anything.
