2018-2023 Ram 1500 3.0L EcoDiesel Rear Differential Covers

Rear differential covers for the 2018-2023 Ram 1500 3.0L EcoDiesel, led by PPE's heavy-duty cast aluminum cover for the 9.25-inch, 12-bolt rear axle. A cover's job is to keep gear oil in the housing, and oil level is the issue with a paper trail on these trucks: a 2018 recall (18V556) covered rear axles that were under-filled at the factory.

The rear axle on the 2018-2023 Ram 1500 3.0L EcoDiesel

Both bodies that got the EcoDiesel, the 2018-2019 DS and the 2020-2023 DT, use a coil-sprung solid rear axle. The rear does the work when you tow: a 2020 EcoDiesel ran the Ike Gauntlet with an 8,700-lb trailer on a 3.55 rear axle. Rebel EcoDiesels from 2020 on have an electronically locking rear differential; other trims have open or limited-slip units.

Why change the cover

A heavy-duty cast aluminum cover makes sense on a truck that tows or works off pavement. Any time the cover comes off, the gear oil comes out, so plan on a fluid change with the swap. If the axle is already whining, especially on a 2018, check the oil level and confirm recall 18V556 on your VIN before you blame anything else. Low fill shows up as whine, heat and, left alone, a seized axle.

What we carry

  • PPE (Pacific Performance Engineering) heavy-duty cast aluminum rear differential cover, listed for the 9.25-inch, 12-bolt axle on 2014-2023 3.0L EcoDiesel trucks.
  • ATS Diesel Performance 402-009-1000 drain plug, a replacement for ATS pans and differential covers.

Fitment notes

DS and DT are different chassis, and axle covers can be body-specific. PPE's listing spans 2014-2023, but run your VIN through the fitment checker before you order. No 2500 or 3500 cover fits; the half-ton axle is a different family.

Frequently asked questions

Will the PPE cover fit my 2019 Ram 1500 Classic EcoDiesel?

PPE lists the cover for 2014-2023 3.0L EcoDiesel trucks with the 9.25-inch, 12-bolt rear axle, and the 2019 Classic falls inside that range. Since DS and DT parts can differ, confirm it with the fitment checker and your VIN before you order.

Do I need new gear oil when I install a differential cover?

Yes. Pulling the cover drains the housing, so you'll refill it either way. Use the grade your owner's manual specifies; we carry Lucas Oil 80W-90 and Royal Purple 75W-140 synthetic on the differential fluid page for this truck.
