The factory setup sends ATF through a coolant-fed heater with a thermal bypass valve (Mopar 52014750AD) that keeps the fluid near 180 F. Owners report that the valve can stick and keep fluid in the warming loop, with transmission temperatures climbing past 185-200 F under load and hot-oil limp mode while towing. Those reports are anecdotal, but they are why aftermarket bypass thermostats are sold for 2014-2020 8HP70/8HP75 Rams. If your temperatures are already high, have the bypass valve checked first. A cooler adds capacity; it is not a diagnosis.

Frequently asked questions
Does my EcoDiesel need an auxiliary transmission cooler?
Not every truck does. If you tow and see transmission temperatures past 185-200 F under load, or you have had hot-oil limp mode, a cooler is worth a look once the thermal bypass valve has been checked. Owners report that valve sticking on 8HP70 Rams.
Are these coolers made just for the Ram 1500?
