Every EcoDiesel Ram 1500 in these years uses the ZF-built TorqueFlite 8HP70 eight-speed. FCA calls the fill lifetime and lists no change interval, and capacity is listed near 8.8 quarts. A coolant-fed heater with a thermal bypass valve warms the fluid toward 180 F. Even with the lifetime label, a fluid-and-pan service before the truck's heavy towing years is a common owner precaution, and on a stock truck the plastic pan with its built-in filter and magnets is replaced during that service.
What we carry
This collection lists Lucas Oil 10418 Multi-Vehicle Automatic Transmission Fluid. As the name says, it is a multi-vehicle ATF, not the ZF-specific fluid the factory names. Before it goes into an 8HP70, check that the bottle lists compatibility with the ZF 8-speed requirement. If it does not, use MOPAR ZF 8&9 Speed ATF, and call us if you want help sorting out the right fluid.
Fitment notes
The 8HP70 is not the 845RE used behind the 3.6L gas V6, and fluid capacities differ between them. The transfer case on 4x4 EcoDiesels is a separate system with its own fluid, and the axles take gear oil, not ATF.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use any ATF in my 2014-2017 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel?
No. The owner's guide approves MOPAR ZF 8&9 Speed ATF only and warns that the wrong fluid may affect function. Treat any other fluid, multi-vehicle ATFs included, as a no unless its label lists that ZF requirement.
How much fluid does the 8HP70 hold?
Capacity is listed near 8.8 quarts. Follow the fill-level check procedure for your truck rather than pouring in a fixed amount, especially after a pan service.
Does the transfer case use the same fluid?
No. The BW 44-44 transfer case on EcoDiesel 4x4s takes about 2 quarts of MOPAR BW44-44 fluid, with inspection every 60,000 miles and a change at 120,000, sooner for heavy towing.
