2014-2017 Ram 1500 3.0L EcoDiesel Engine Oil

Oil additives and stabilizers for the 2014-2017 Ram 1500 3.0L EcoDiesel. Start with the oil itself: FCA calls for 10.5 quarts of 5W-40 synthetic meeting MS-10902, and early trucks labeled for 5W-30 were moved to 5W-40 by TSB. Anything on this page goes in on top of that oil, never instead of it.

Engine oil on the 2014-2017 Ram 1500 3.0L EcoDiesel

The EcoDiesel takes 10.5 quarts with the filter, 5W-40 synthetic such as Mopar or Shell Rotella meeting FCA MS-10902. Trucks built before June 30, 2016 were originally labeled for 5W-30, but TSB 18-078-16 moved them to 5W-40 API CJ-4, so run 5W-40 synthetic on every 2014-2019 truck. The filter is Mopar 68229402AA. The oil-change indicator maxes out at 10,000 miles or 12 months, cut to 8,000 miles or 6 months on B6-B20 biodiesel. Do not let it count down to zero: at 0 miles remaining the truck disables DPF regeneration until a dealer resets it, and a check-engine light and reduced power follow quickly.

What an additive can and can't do

Diesel Hub's advice for this engine is to change oil sooner than the 10,000-mile maximum and run used-oil analysis, because the oil-life monitor has no oil-quality sensor. That is the practical protection for the bottom end and the oil cooler. No bottle fixes an oil cooler failure, the most common EcoDiesel engine problem: milky or over-full oil means the cooler is letting coolant and oil mix, and the fix is the updated Mopar 68624177AA oil filter/cooler assembly. The owner guide says the factory engine needs no break-in period, so a break-in additive belongs with fresh engine work, not routine oil changes.

What we carry

Lucas Oil 10001 Heavy Duty Oil Stabilizer, 10130 Synthetic Heavy Duty Oil Stabilizer and 10063 TB Zinc Plus engine break-in oil additive, plus the XDP XD275 X-Factor high performance oil additive in an 8 oz bottle. Follow each product's directions for how much to add.

Fitment notes

Additives fit by chemistry, not by truck, but the oil underneath them has to be right. The 2020-2023 third-generation EcoDiesel takes 8.5 quarts of 5W-40 to MS-12991, a different spec and capacity from this engine, so do not size your order off a newer truck's numbers.

Frequently asked questions

What oil does the 2014-2017 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel take?

10.5 quarts with the filter of 5W-40 synthetic meeting FCA MS-10902, such as Mopar or Shell Rotella. Trucks first labeled for 5W-30 should run 5W-40 too, per TSB 18-078-16.

Can an oil additive stop oil and coolant from mixing?

No. Cross-contamination means the engine oil cooler has failed internally. The fix is the updated Mopar 68624177AA oil filter/cooler assembly, installed with a full OAT coolant flush and new cooler hoses and O-rings.

What happens if the oil-change indicator hits zero?

The truck disables DPF regeneration until a dealer resets it, which quickly brings a check-engine light and reduced power. Change the oil before it gets there.
