Call or Text (352) 722-5295Coolant reservoir on the 2014-2017 Ram 1500 3.0L EcoDiesel
The EcoDiesel uses a pressurized coolant reservoir on the passenger side of the engine bay, shown as item 8 on the owner guide's engine-compartment diagram. It is the tank you look into when you check coolant level, in a system that holds 11.6 to 12 quarts of MOPAR OAT coolant. Because that coolant also runs through the engine oil cooler and the EGR cooler, what you see in this tank tells you a lot about the engine.
Why the reservoir gets replaced
The most common EcoDiesel cooling complaint is an engine oil cooler that fails internally and mixes oil into the coolant. The signs are an oily film or black jelly in this reservoir, a coolant smell, coolant loss and overheating. The repair is the updated Mopar 68624177AA oil filter/cooler assembly plus a full flush, because oil residue coats the radiator, heater core and reservoir. Owner reports of dealer repair lists show the reservoir is usually replaced at that point, since the residue can't be fully cleaned out of it. A clean tank also makes it easier to see afterward whether the level is holding.
When the level keeps dropping
If the tank keeps going down and there is no puddle, do not make topping it off a habit. The EGR cooler can crack from thermal fatigue and leak coolant into the intake. Recall 19V-757, FCA campaign VB1, covers 2014-2019 Ram 1500 EcoDiesels built June 12, 2013 through October 23, 2019, and dealers install the improved 68483334AA cooler. Run your VIN for open recalls before you chase anything else.
What we carry
The Dorman 603-833 coolant recovery tank reservoir, listed for the 2014-2019 3.0L EcoDiesel. It is a replacement for the factory tank, the part to have on hand when an oil cooler repair is on the schedule.
Fitment notes
Buy the reservoir by Ram 1500 application. The Jeep Grand Cherokee EcoDiesel shares the engine but not the reservoir, radiator, fans or hoses. The Dorman listing runs through 2019, which takes in the 2019 Ram 1500 Classic that kept the same engine; the redesigned DT Ram 1500 takes different parts. Refill with OAT coolant only, never HOAT or universal coolant. Verify by VIN.
Frequently asked questions
Should I replace the coolant reservoir after an oil cooler failure?
Usually, yes. Owner reports of dealer repair lists show the reservoir replaced because oil residue can't be fully cleaned out of it. Putting a contaminated tank back on a freshly flushed system works against the flush.
Where is the coolant reservoir on a Ram 1500 EcoDiesel?
On the passenger side of the engine bay. The owner guide's engine-compartment diagram shows it as item 8. When you check it, look for oily film or black jelly as well as the level.
Will a Jeep Grand Cherokee EcoDiesel reservoir fit my Ram?
No. The Grand Cherokee shares the 3.0L engine but not the radiator, fans, reservoir or hoses. Buy by Ram 1500 application.
