2014-2017 Ram 1500 3.0L EcoDiesel Brake Parts

Brake parts and service supplies for the 2014-2017 Ram 1500 with the 3.0L EcoDiesel. The diesel uses the same brake hardware as the gas half-ton, so the story on these trucks is fluid, wear from the diesel's extra front weight and towing, and an ABS module known to quit with code C2200. Here is what to watch and what we stock.

Brakes on the 2014-2017 Ram 1500 3.0L EcoDiesel

Every 2014-2017 Ram 1500 rides on the same brake package, whether it has the EcoDiesel, the 5.7L HEMI or the 3.6L gas V6. Up front you get 13.2 x 1.1-inch vented rotors clamped by two-piston pin-slider calipers, with 292 square inches of swept area. Out back are 13.8 x 0.87-inch discs with single-piston calipers and 274 square inches of swept area. A dual-rate tandem-diaphragm vacuum booster provides the assist, and four-wheel ABS works with the stability control. The factory fill is MOPAR DOT 3 brake fluid (SAE J1703), with DOT 4 listed as acceptable if DOT 3 is not available. An integrated trailer brake controller was also available from the factory on EcoDiesel trucks, which matters if you pull a camper or an equipment trailer.

What fails and why

The friction parts wear like they do on any half-ton, only a little faster. The EcoDiesel puts extra weight over the front axle, and towing adds to the load, so pads and rotors work harder. Watch for pulsation in the pedal, squeal, or a long pedal. FCA's schedule calls for pads, rotors and hoses to be inspected at every oil change and the brake linings every 20,000 miles.

The bigger headache is electronic. The ABS control module on 2013-2018 Ram 1500s (Mopar 68228991AC/AD) can fail internally and set code C2200-49. When it does, the ABS, brake and traction lights come on, the dash shows Service ABS System, and cruise control stops working. Some owners have reported wheels locking in hard stops, and a failed module can keep the truck from passing inspection. Reported failures range from about 57,000 to 212,000 miles, some under 60,000, and NHTSA lists roughly 45-55 complaints per model year for 2015 and 2016. The factory module was discontinued and sat on backorder for long stretches, which is why repair services and used modules became the common workaround.

Stock replacement vs. upgrade

The DS-body Ram 1500 never had a factory big-brake option, and the EcoDiesel shares the gas truck's hardware. That makes higher-grade OEM-size pads with coated rotors the practical upgrade. For the ABS module, the fix is a replacement or rebuilt unit from the 68228991 family, or a repair service on your original module. Either way, the module has to be initialized and its accelerometer calibrated with a scan tool after it goes in, so it is not a plug-and-play part. On fluid, stay with what the owner's manual asks for: DOT 3, with DOT 4 as the approved fallback.

What we carry

This collection covers brake fluid, cleaning supplies and lifted-truck brake lines. Lucas Oil supplies the fluid and chemicals: Lucas 10825 DOT 3 Synthetic Brake Fluid is the fluid type the factory specifies, Lucas 10827 DOT 4 Synthetic Brake Fluid is the alternative the manual permits, Lucas 10906 Non-Chlorinated Brake Parts Cleaner is for cleaning calipers, rotors and hardware during a brake job, and Lucas 10799 Contact Cleaner is made for electrical connections. For lifted trucks, BDS Suspension offers a front brake line set made for 4WD 2014-2017 EcoDiesel trucks running a 6-inch lift.

Fitment notes

Brake hardware is identical across every 2014-2017 Ram 1500 engine, so shop by model year and 2WD or 4WD, not by the word diesel. In these years the EcoDiesel was a Ram 1500 engine only, and the Ram 2500 and 3500 use much larger brakes, so nothing crosses over between them. The BDS line set is for 4WD trucks with a 6-inch lift. If you are not sure how your truck is equipped, check the VIN or call us before you order.

Frequently asked questions

Does the EcoDiesel Ram 1500 need different brakes than the gas trucks?

No. The 2014-2017 Ram 1500 uses the same brake hardware with every engine: 13.2-inch vented rotors and two-piston calipers up front, 13.8-inch discs and single-piston calipers in back. Order by year and 2WD or 4WD. The diesel's extra front weight and towing duty can wear pads and rotors faster, so keep up with inspections.

Can I use DOT 4 brake fluid in my 2014-2017 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel?

The owner's manual calls for MOPAR DOT 3 fluid (SAE J1703) and lists DOT 4 as acceptable if DOT 3 is not available. We carry both from Lucas Oil. If you want to stay on the factory spec, use DOT 3.

My ABS, brake and traction lights are on and the cruise quit. What is it?

On 2013-2018 Ram 1500s, that combination matches the known ABS control module failure, which sets code C2200-49. Scan the truck to confirm the code before buying parts. The fix is a replacement or rebuilt module in the 68228991 family, or a repair service on your unit, and the module must be initialized and its accelerometer calibrated with a scan tool afterward.

How often should I check the brakes on my EcoDiesel?

FCA's schedule calls for pads, rotors and hoses to be inspected at every oil change and the brake linings to be checked every 20,000 miles. If you tow, take those inspections seriously, since the added load speeds up wear on top of the diesel's extra front weight.

Do I need new brake lines if I lift my EcoDiesel?

The BDS Suspension front brake line set here is built for 4WD 2014-2017 EcoDiesel trucks with a 6-inch lift, so if that is your setup, it is the line set meant to go with it. For other lift heights, follow the lift maker's instructions on brake lines before you buy.
