The owner guide lists 75W-140 synthetic meeting MS-8985 for the rear axle. If your truck has the optional anti-spin limited slip, add 5 oz of Mopar Limited Slip Additive (MS-10111) with the fill. The front axle on 4x4 trucks takes 75W-85 GL-5 synthetic, a different grade, so never top one off from the other's bottle. Ram schedules an axle fluid inspection every 30,000 miles and requires a change at that point for frequent towing, off-road, police, taxi or fleet use.
What we carry
Royal Purple 01301 Max-Gear is a 75W-140 synthetic, the viscosity Ram lists for the EcoDiesel's rear axle. Lucas Oil 10043 Heavy Duty is an 80W-90 gear oil. That is not the grade the owner guide gives for either axle on this truck, so check what your axle calls for before you use it here.
Fitment notes
Confirm your axle setup by VIN or build sheet: open or limited slip, 3.55 or 3.92, 4x2 or 4x4. A 4x2 truck has only the rear axle to fill.
Frequently asked questions
Can I run 80W-90 in my EcoDiesel's rear axle?
Ram's owner guide calls for 75W-140 synthetic in the rear C235, not 80W-90. Stick with the factory grade, and add the 5 oz limited-slip additive on anti-spin axles.
Does towing change the gear oil interval?
It does. The normal schedule is an inspection every 30,000 miles. Frequent towing, off-road driving and police, taxi or fleet duty turn that inspection into a required fluid change.
