Trailer hookup on the 2010-2018 RAM 6.7L Cummins

For 2013 the 6.7L Cummins Ram HD added an integrated trailer brake controller and a tailgate-mounted HD camera. For 2016 Ram added a switchable backup camera and front park assist, and for 2018 the backup camera became standard. More of what you need for towing is built into the truck on the later years, but the trailer connection still runs through the socket at the back. The 7-pole side of a trailer socket carries the brake circuit from the controller to an electric-brake trailer, and the 4-pole side runs lights on smaller trailers.

When the trailer brakes feel weak

Owners have reported the integrated trailer brake controller delivering too little power to the trailer brakes on 2015 Ram 3500s. That pattern comes from owner complaints, not a recall. If your trailer braking feels weak, check the controller output and the socket connection before you start pulling the trailer's brakes apart.

Choosing balls and sleeves

A hitch ball has two sizes that matter: the ball diameter, which has to match your trailer's coupler, and the shank diameter, which has to match the hole in your ball mount. When the ball's shank is smaller than the hole, a reducer sleeve takes up the gap so the ball sits tight. Check the ball's rating against your trailer too, because the lowest-rated part in the chain sets the limit, and on 2010-2012 trucks the receiver is lower-rated than the Class V on 2013-2018 trucks.

What we carry

  • B&W Trailer Hitches BW-THB hitch balls and BW-RE-SL reducer sleeves.
  • Big Hitch Products BHP4003 7 & 4 pole trailer connector socket with mounting bracket, listed for 2003-2025 5.9L and 6.7L Cummins Rams.

For receivers, ball mounts and bed hitches, see our hitches page.

Fitment notes

Hitch balls and sleeves fit by size, not by truck, so measure your coupler and the hole in your ball mount. The BHP4003 socket is listed by truck, so confirm your year with the fitment checker on the product page or call with your VIN.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a reducer sleeve?

Only when the hitch ball's shank is smaller than the hole in your ball mount. The sleeve fills the gap so the ball can be tightened down solid. If the shank and the hole already match, skip it.

Does my 2010-2012 Ram have an integrated trailer brake controller?

Ram brought in the integrated trailer brake controller with the 2013 update, along with the tailgate camera and the Class V receiver. On a 2010-2012 truck, check your dash before you plan a trailer-brake setup around it.

Why do my trailer brakes feel weak on my 2015 Ram 3500?

Owners have reported the integrated controller sending too little power to the trailer brakes on 2015 3500s. It's an owner-complaint pattern, not a recall. Check the controller output and the socket connection first, and call the shop if you want a second set of eyes.

What does a 7 & 4 pole socket do?

It puts both plugs in one housing: a 7-pole for trailers with electric brakes and a 4-pole for lighter trailers that only need lights. The BHP4003 comes with a mounting bracket.
