The steering box on the 2010-2018 RAM 6.7L Cummins

Fourth-gen Ram HDs with the 6.7L Cummins use a recirculating-ball power steering box bolted to the frame. The sector shaft out the bottom of the box turns the pitman arm, which moves the drag link and steers the solid front axle. The 2013 overhaul brought revised steering gear and linkage along with a wider front end, and 2013-and-later boxes differ from the 2010-2012 boxes. Know which side of that line your truck sits on before you shop.

What fails and why

Play in the sector shaft is the box's wear mode. It develops at higher mileage and with larger wheels and tires, and you feel it as wander, a dead spot on center and wobble at highway speed. These trucks have long had a reputation for touchy front ends and steering linkages, so rule out the rest of the front end too. A loose pitman arm nut feels much the same as a worn box.

Stock replacement vs. upgrade

If the box is otherwise sound and the complaint is play, a steering box stabilizer is the first step. The BD Diesel unit adds a greaseable bearing support at the sector shaft to take out play.
