2010-2018 Ram 6.7L Cummins Steering Stabilizers

Steering stabilizers and dampers for the 2010-2018 Ram 2500 and 3500 with the 6.7L Cummins, from BDS Suspension and Bilstein. The thing to know: on these trucks the damper is the second line of defense against death wobble, right behind the track bar. A good one helps. A cheap one can make the shake worse.

Steering stabilizers on the 2010-2018 RAM 6.7L Cummins

A steering stabilizer, also called a steering damper, is a shock absorber mounted between the axle and the steering linkage. It takes the sharp kicks that come up through the tires before they reach the wheel in your hands. On a solid-axle fourth-gen Ram HD with the 6.7L Cummins, it is a key part of keeping the front end calm. Ram revised the front suspension, steering gear and linkage for 2013, so dampers and their mounts are listed by year range.

What fails and why

Death wobble is why most owners land on this page. It is a violent shake after a bump at 45-74 mph that will not stop until you slow down, sometimes hard enough to smoke the tires. The track bar is the leading cause, with soft factory bushings letting the axle shift side to side. A weak damper is next in line, followed by tire construction. Owner reports put it anywhere from 40,000 to more than 200,000 miles.

Stock replacement vs. upgrade

Choose an internal floating piston (IFP) damper with a gas charge of 100 psi or more, not a budget unit. A single damper takes the place of one unit on the linkage. A dual kit mounts a pair of dampers, and BDS pairs its kits with FOX 2.0 or NX2 shocks. Either way, a damper does not fix a worn track bar. Sort out the track bar first, then the damper.

What we carry

BDS Suspension dual steering stabilizer kits with FOX 2.0 Performance shocks or NX2 shocks, in versions for 2008-2013/12 and 2014/13-2018 4WD trucks, plus a standalone dual stabilizer mounting kit. Bilstein B8 5100 Series dampers: the 33-170794 single steering damper for 2008-2012 4WD trucks and the 53-264817 dual steering damper kit for 2014/13-2025 4WD trucks.

Fitment notes

Everything here is listed for 4WD trucks. Several BDS kits are listed for T-style steering, so check your linkage layout against the title. Damper parts split at 2010-2012 versus 2013-2018, and the 2500 often changes a year after the 3500, which is why titles read 2013/12 and 2014/13. If your truck runs aftermarket linkage, check the mounting points before ordering. Verify by VIN.

Frequently asked questions

Will a steering stabilizer stop death wobble on my Ram?

It helps, but it is the second fix, not the first. The track bar leads death wobble on these trucks, so replace worn track bar parts first. Then add an IFP damper with a 100 psi or higher gas charge; a cheap damper can make it worse.

Should I run a single damper or a dual stabilizer kit?

The Bilstein 33-170794 is a single damper for 2008-2012 trucks. The dual kits from BDS and Bilstein mount two dampers, and the BDS kits come with FOX 2.0 or NX2 shocks. Match the kit to your year range and steering layout, and call us if you are torn.

Does a 2012 damper fit a 2014 Ram 2500?

Generally no. Ram revised the steering gear and linkage for 2013, and builders split the 2500 at 2014. Buy the version listed for your range and confirm with the fitment checker.
