Call or Text (352) 722-5295The downpipe on the 2010-2018 Ram 6.7L Cummins
On the 6.7L Cummins, exhaust leaves the manifold, drives the variable-geometry turbo, and exits the turbo outlet into the downpipe, which runs to the DOC and DPF inlet. From there it passes through the rest of the aftertreatment: the NOx adsorber on 2010-2012 pickups, or the SCR catalyst with DEF on 2013-2018 pickups. The turbo itself changed in 2013. 2010-2012 trucks use the Holset HE351VE, and 2013-2018 trucks use the Holset HE300VG, so parts at the turbo outlet are year-specific. The same turbo is also your exhaust brake; it brakes by closing its vanes.
When you need one
The downpipe is not where this engine's known exhaust trouble lives. That is the manifold upstream, which shrinks with heat cycling, snaps bolts and leaks at the head. The downpipe and turbo elbow come up when a part is damaged, when the turbo comes off for service, or when the outlet joint needs new hardware. Treat it as a fitment-driven replacement and buy the part listed for your year.
Stock replacement vs. upgrade
Keep it simple here. A replacement downpipe or elbow should be an OEM-style part that bolts up ahead of the DOC and keeps the DOC, DPF and SCR exactly where the factory put them. If you are after more flow or a different sound, the compliant place to do it on this truck is behind the aftertreatment, with a DPF-back system. Those start after the DPF, and after the SCR on 2013-2018 trucks, and replace the tailpipe and muffler section.
What we carry
This page carries the BD Diesel 1045101 cast turbo exhaust elbow, listed for 2007.5-2012 Cummins trucks. Those are the Holset HE351VE years, so on this page it is a 2010, 2011 or 2012 part. DPF-back systems are in the full exhaust collection.
Fitment notes
The BD elbow is listed for 2007.5-2012. A 2013-2018 truck runs the HE300VG turbo and needs outlet parts listed for those years. Ram 3500, 4500 and 5500 chassis cabs share the engine but use different frames and exhaust routing, so verify those separately. Check which turbo is on your truck, and verify by VIN before you order.
Frequently asked questions
Will the BD Diesel 1045101 elbow fit my 2016 Ram 2500?
No. It is listed for 2007.5-2012 Cummins trucks, which run the Holset HE351VE. The 2013-2018 trucks switched to the Holset HE300VG, so they need parts listed for those years.
Can I replace my downpipe and keep the truck emissions compliant?
Yes, with an OEM-style replacement. On this truck the downpipe feeds the DOC and DPF, and the right replacement keeps the DOC, DPF and SCR in place. If you want more flow, do it behind the aftertreatment with a DPF-back system.
What is the difference between a downpipe and a DPF-back system?
The downpipe runs from the turbo to the DOC and DPF inlet, ahead of the aftertreatment. A DPF-back system starts after the DPF, and after the SCR on 2013-2018 trucks, and replaces the tailpipe section that holds the factory muffler.
Does my 2012 have SCR and DEF?
No. 2010-2012 pickups use cooled EGR, a DOC, a NOx adsorber catalyst and a DPF, with no DEF. SCR with DEF arrived on pickups for 2013, which is one reason exhaust parts split at that year.
