2007.5-2009 Dodge 6.7L Cummins Steering Boxes

Steering gearboxes and box stabilizers for the 2007.5-2009 Ram 2500 and 3500 4x4 with the 6.7L Cummins. The box is a frame-mounted recirculating-ball gear, and the complaints owners report on high-mileage trucks are leaks and play in the sector shaft. Check the linkage too, because a loose tie rod can feel a lot like a worn box.

The steering box on the 2007.5-2009 Ram 6.7L Cummins

On 4x4 trucks, the steering gear is a recirculating-ball box bolted to the frame rail. The steering column turns the input, and the sector shaft on the output swings the pitman arm, which drives the drag link and tie rod out to the wheels. The chassis carried over from the 2006-2007 trucks when the 6.7L Cummins arrived mid-2007, which is why many gearbox listings start at 2003. Two-wheel-drive trucks are listed with power rack-and-pinion steering instead, so the gearboxes here are for 4x4s.

What fails and why

Owners report two things on high-mileage boxes: fluid leaks and play in the sector shaft. You notice it as wander, a clunk you can feel in the wheel, slack at center and fluid loss. Box braces and heavy-duty replacement gears are both sold for the 2007.5-2009 trucks. Before you condemn the box, check the linkage. Recalls cover the drag link on 2008-2009 Ram 2500 and 3500 trucks and the left tie rod on 4x4s from these years, and a failing tie rod also shows up as a clunk and loose steering.

Stock replacement vs. upgrade

If the box leaks or has play and the truck is otherwise stock, a new stock-style gearbox is the direct fix. It replaces the worn unit without changing your steering layout. If the truck runs a lift or bigger tires, or you are already rebuilding the front end, add a steering box stabilizer, which braces the box to the frame. A brace does not fix a worn gear, though. If there is play inside the box, replace the box.

What we carry

XDP supplies new Stock+ power steering gearboxes in two versions: the XD750 for 2003-2008 5.9L and 6.7L Cummins 4WD trucks and the XD752 for 2009-2025 6.7L Cummins 4WD trucks. These are new units, not rebuilds. BD Diesel supplies the 1032003 steering box stabilizer, listed for 2003-2018 Cummins trucks.

Fitment notes

Pick the gearbox by model year. A 2007.5 or 2008 6.7L truck falls under the XD750 listing, and a 2009 truck falls under the XD752. Both are listed for 4WD only, and 2WD trucks are listed with rack-and-pinion steering. The BD box stabilizer is listed for 2003-2018 Cummins trucks. The 4500/5500 chassis cabs use a different chassis where most pickup parts do not interchange, so check before ordering. Verify by VIN.

Frequently asked questions

How do I tell a worn steering box from worn linkage?

Both can clunk and feel loose. A worn box tends to show fluid loss at the box and play at center, while a failing tie rod or drag link on these trucks can cause a clunk, loose steering or sudden loss of steering on the left front. Have the linkage checked, including the recalls, before you replace the box.

Which XDP gearbox fits my 2007.5-2009 Ram?

The XD750 is listed for 2003-2008 5.9L and 6.7L Cummins 4WD trucks, so it covers 2007.5 and 2008. The XD752 is listed for 2009-2025 6.7L Cummins 4WD trucks, so it covers 2009. Neither is for 2WD trucks. If you are unsure of your model year or drivetrain, confirm by VIN before ordering.

Do I need a steering box stabilizer?

It is not required on a stock truck, but box braces are widely sold for these trucks, and the BD Diesel stabilizer is listed for 2003-2018 Cummins pickups. It makes the most sense when you are already replacing the box or upgrading the front end. It supports the box; it does not fix play inside a worn gear.
