2007.5-2009 Dodge 6.7L Cummins Fuel Tanks

Fuel tank parts for the 2007.5-2009 Ram 2500 and 3500 with the 6.7L Cummins. One thing to know before you order: these trucks were not built with a diesel exhaust fluid system. They control NOx with cooled EGR and a NOx adsorber catalyst, and SCR with DEF didn't reach Ram pickups until 2013. Check the fitment notes on anything DEF-related.

Fuel tank parts on the 2007.5-2009 Ram 6.7L Cummins

The fuel tank on these trucks does more than hold diesel. The factory electric lift pump module lives inside it and pushes fuel to the single engine-mounted canister filter on the driver side, then to the gear-driven Bosch CP3, the common rail and six solenoid injectors. That ties tank work to fuel supply: replacing the in-tank module, adding a sump for a frame-mounted pump, or chasing a supply problem all start at the tank. For the rest of this engine, see our Cummins parts.

What goes wrong in and around the tank

The factory in-tank pump is a single gerotor unit, and Fleece points to its limited flow margin as the weak link once fuel demand rises. Reported signs include low rail pressure codes (P0087), hard starts after the truck sits, stumbling under load, and trouble that gets worse below a quarter tank. Mileage varies, and owners often first notice it when towing. Before you go into the tank, check the engine fuel filter. Chrysler calls for it every 15,000 miles or 12 months, and filter neglect is the top preventable fuel problem on these trucks.

About DEF on these trucks

The emissions package on the 2007.5-2009 pickups is cooled EGR, a diesel oxidation catalyst, a NOx adsorber catalyst and a diesel particulate filter with active regeneration. SCR and diesel exhaust fluid were not part of that design. SCR arrived on chassis cabs for 2011 and on pickups for 2013, and the DEF tank and fill came with it. A 2007.5-2009 truck has nothing for a DEF cap to fit.

What we carry

The part in this collection is a Pacific Performance Engineering billet DEF cap (273005000) in anodized blue. PPE's listing runs from 2007.5 through 2026 on the 6.7L, and that range takes in the later 6.7L Ram 2500 and 3500 trucks that do have a DEF tank. It has nothing to fit on a 2007.5-2009 truck, because those trucks were built before DEF. If you also own a 2013-or-newer 6.7L pickup, the cap is listed for that truck. If your project is fuel supply on a 2007.5-2009, the lift pump and sump pages for this truck are the place to look.

Fitment notes

Chassis cabs follow the same timeline: SCR came to chassis cabs for 2011, so 2007.5-2009 chassis cabs were also built before DEF. For parts inside the fuel tank, the lift pump module splits 2005-2009, 2010 and 2011 and newer, and a 2007.5-2009 truck takes the 2005-2009 module. The 4500/5500 chassis cabs use a different chassis, and most pickup parts don't interchange. Verify by VIN before ordering anything tank-related.

Frequently asked questions

Does my 2008 Ram 6.7L have a DEF tank?

No. The 2007.5-2009 6.7L trucks control NOx with cooled EGR and a NOx adsorber catalyst, along with a DOC and a DPF. SCR and diesel exhaust fluid arrived on 2011 chassis cabs and 2013 pickups, so a DEF cap won't have anything to fit on your truck.

Why does my truck run worse below a quarter tank?

That's one of the reported signs of a factory in-tank lift pump running short on flow margin, along with P0087 low rail pressure codes, hard starts after sitting and stumbling under load. Rule out the fuel filter first, then look at the pump. The replacement module for these years is the 2005-2009 version, not the 2010 part.

Can you do tank work for me?

Yes. We're a diesel shop in Wildwood, FL, and we install what we sell. If the job involves the tank, like a sump install for a frame-mounted pump, call the number in the header and we'll confirm parts by VIN before the truck comes in.

Not sure what fits? Call the shop at the number in the header, or use the fitment checker on any product page. We install everything we sell.
