Exhaust accessories for the 2007.5-2009 Ram 6.7L Cummins

Every joint and sensor on this exhaust has a job. On the 6.7L Cummins, the cast manifold feeds the HE351VE turbo, the downpipe carries exhaust into the oxidation catalyst, NOx adsorber and particulate filter, and cooled EGR plumbing sends some exhaust back toward the intake. Gaskets seal each of those joints. Oxygen, exhaust gas temperature and backpressure sensors report what is happening in the pipe. What fails and why

Sensors are the accessory with an owner-reported failure pattern on these trucks. Owners of 2009 Ram 2500s report O2-type exhaust sensors burning out repeatedly, and the result is a check engine light with sensor codes and regens that fail. That pattern comes from owner reports, so confirm which sensor is at fault with a scan tool before you buy. The exhaust manifold studs on this engine are also known to break and the cast manifold can crack, so manifold gaskets often get replaced along with hardware. Any time you take the manifold, EGR plumbing or cylinder head apart, plan on new gaskets at every joint you open.

Stock replacement vs. upgrade

Gaskets and sensors are replacement parts: you want the right part for the joint or the port, not something different. MAHLE gaskets and head sets, the Cummins genuine upper engine gasket kit, the Dorman EGR gasket kit and the ATS manifold gasket set all fall in that camp, as do the XDP O2, EGT and backpressure sensors. Tips and heat wrap are where personal choice comes in. Tips change the look at the end of the pipe, from straight cut to angle cut to turndown, single or dual wall, polished or black. Heat wrap goes on the pipe to hold heat in and keep it away from nearby parts.

Match the tip inlet to your tailpipe diameter; the MBRP tips here have a 4-inch inlet, sized for 4-inch systems. PPE tips are listed by size (3-inch and 4-inch), so measure first. Gasket year ranges vary: the MAHLE G32481 EGR-to-inlet-pipe gasket is listed for 2007.5-2012 and 2017-2018, and the F32901 flange gasket for 2007.5-2010. Which exhaust tip fits a 4-inch filter-back system on my Ram?

Look for a 4-inch inlet. The MBRP tips in this collection use a 4-inch inlet with outlets from 4 inches up to 8 inches, in straight, angle-cut, turndown, rolled-edge and black hex styles. PPE also offers a 4-inch stainless tip.

My 2009 Ram 2500 keeps setting O2 sensor codes. Is that common?

Owners of 2009 Ram 2500s do report O2-type sensors failing more than once, along with check engine lights and failed regens. It is an owner-reported pattern, not a documented defect. Scan the truck to confirm which sensor is reporting before you replace it; the XDP O2 sensor here is listed for 2007.5-2012.

Does my 2007.5-2009 6.7L already have an exhaust brake?

Yes. The factory Holset HE351VE turbo works as an exhaust brake by closing its nozzle to build backpressure. The BD Diesel remote-mount exhaust brake is a separate unit; read its listing and call the shop to confirm it makes sense for your truck before ordering.
