2007.5-2009 Dodge 6.7L Cummins Short & Long Blocks

Crate short blocks, long blocks and a ready-run engine from D&J Precision Machine for the 2007.5-2009 Ram 2500 and 3500 6.7L Cummins. One failure worth knowing on this engine is the grid heater bolt: if it drops into the intake, it can roll into cylinder #6 and cause damage that needs a complete rebuild.

Crate engines for the 2007.5-2009 Ram 6.7L Cummins

The 6.7L is a grey cast-iron block displacing 6.69 liters actual, with 17.2:1 compression, an induction-hardened forged crank, powdered-metal rods and cast aluminum pistons. It weighs about 1,120 lb dry. When the block, crank or cylinders are past saving, a crate engine replaces the core of the Cummins in one piece instead of you machining and assembling your own. Pickups are rated 350 hp and 3500 chassis cabs 305 hp, so know which truck you have before you start.

What fails and why

The grid heater is the failure to know about. Its stud and nut have been documented coming loose and falling into the intake manifold, and the engine's 5-degree rake rolls the hardware back into cylinder #6. Banks documents this for 2007.5-2012 6.7L Rams, and the damage can require a complete engine rebuild. Symptoms include a sudden misfire, knocking, loss of power and metal debris on the intake side. It tracks age and heat cycles more than miles, so higher-mileage trucks are the most exposed. Head gaskets also fail more often on this engine than on the 5.9L, especially with added boost or after repeated overheating, so if overheating played a part in losing the old engine, fix that before the new one goes in.

Short block, long block or ready-run

D&J offers both an Essential line and a Precision Plus line here. A short block is the bottom end: the block and its rotating assembly. A long block adds the cylinder head and valvetrain. The Precision Plus Ready Run crate engine is the most complete package on this page. The choice comes down to what you can reuse. If your head is healthy and only the bottom end is hurt, a short block lets you keep it. If the damage reached past the bottom end, a long block or the ready-run engine saves the most assembly. Check each product page for exactly what is included and how the Essential and Precision Plus builds differ.

What we carry

This collection is all D&J Precision Machine: the Essential 6.7 short block and long block, the Precision Plus 6.7 short block and long block, and the Precision Plus 6.7 Ready Run crate engine. For the parts that go on around a new engine, the rest of our engine section has gasket kits, head studs, belts and oil.

Fitment notes

Every D&J crate engine on this page is listed for 2007.5-2012 6.7L Cummins, which covers the 2007.5-2009 Ram 2500 and 3500. Pickups and 3500 chassis cabs differ in rating and in some hard parts, and the 4500 and 5500 chassis cabs use a different chassis where most pickup parts do not interchange, so confirm your truck before ordering. Verify by VIN, or call the shop and we will check fitment with you.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a short block and a long block?

A short block is the bottom end, the block with its rotating assembly. A long block adds the cylinder head and valvetrain on top. Check D&J's product pages for exactly what each package includes before you order.

Do these crate engines fit my 2008 Ram 2500?

D&J lists all of them for 2007.5-2012 6.7L Cummins, which includes the 2007.5-2009 Ram 2500 and 3500 pickups. Confirm by VIN before ordering, and tell us if the truck is a chassis cab.

What is the grid heater bolt failure?

The factory grid heater's stud and nut can come loose and fall into the intake manifold. Because the engine sits at a 5-degree rake, the hardware rolls back into cylinder #6, and the result can be catastrophic failure that needs a complete rebuild.

What oil goes in a replacement 6.7L?

The same low-ash spec as the original: API CJ-4 or CK-4, 15W-40 above 0 F or 5W-40 full synthetic, 12.0 quarts with the filter. The DPF cannot tolerate high-ash oil. Check the product page for any break-in requirements before the first start.
