2007.5-2009 Dodge 6.7L Cummins Coolant

Coolant and coolant additives for the 2007.5-2009 Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500 with the 6.7L Cummins. The one thing to know: the system holds about 5.7 gallons, the factory fill is Mopar 10-year/150,000-mile antifreeze mixed 50/50 with distilled water, and the factory flush comes due at 97,500 miles or 60 months, whichever comes first.

Coolant for the 2007.5-2009 Ram 6.7L Cummins

Coolant on the 6.7L Cummins covers more ground than it did on the 5.9L this engine replaced. A belt-driven pump sends it through the block and head, through the EGR cooler that arrived with the 6.7L, and through the water-cooled center section of the Holset turbo before it reaches the radiator. Every one of those passages depends on the right mix at the right level.

What the coolant level is telling you

When the level moves, look for the reason before you pour. A level that keeps dropping with no puddle under the truck can point to the EGR cooler, especially with white, sweet-smelling exhaust; internal EGR cooler leaks are a known pattern on DPF-era diesels, though not documented as a 6.7L-specific weakness. Coolant pushed out of the bottle under load, bubbles or steam are the first signs of a head gasket. A weep at the radiator's top tank seam points to the factory plastic-tank radiator. Topping off hides all three.

Factory spec vs. alternatives

The factory calls for Mopar's 10-year/150,000-mile antifreeze. If you change brands, read the label for what the product is built for and how it is mixed. Pre-mixed coolant goes in as-is. Concentrate gets mixed 50/50 with distilled water, the same way the factory fill is. If you cannot tell what is already in the system, a full flush and refill is cleaner than mixing two products in the same 5.7 gallons.

What we carry

Mishimoto Liquid Chill comes pre-mixed in yellow and purple, as a synthetic coolant in standard and pre-mixed form, and as a Liquid Chill radiator coolant additive. Hot Shot's Secret offers one-gallon extended-life coolants: a 150K-mile green, a 150,000-mile heavy-duty yellow and a 750,000-mile heavy-duty ultra long life red. Lucas Oil 10640 Super Coolant rounds out the shelf.

Fitment notes

Coolant is not year-specific the way hard parts are, but the spec matters. Check each product's label against Mopar's requirement for your truck, whether it is a 2500, a 3500 or a chassis cab. Plan on about 5.7 gallons of finished mix for a full refill, and use the fitment checker on the product page if you are unsure.

Frequently asked questions

How much coolant does a 2007.5-2009 6.7L Cummins take?

About 5.7 gallons for the full system. If you buy concentrate, that total is the finished 50/50 mix with distilled water, not the amount of concentrate. Pre-mixed jugs count gallon for gallon.

When should I flush the coolant on my 6.7L Ram?

The factory interval is 97,500 miles or 60 months on Mopar 10-year/150,000-mile antifreeze. If you switch to a different coolant, follow that product's stated service life and keep the 50/50 mix with distilled water. Flush sooner if the coolant looks contaminated.

My coolant keeps dropping but I can't find a leak. What is it?

On this engine, coolant loss with no external leak can point to the EGR cooler, especially if the exhaust is white and smells sweet. A bottle that overfills or bubbles under load points to a head gasket. A water pump with a failed impeller can also overheat the truck with nothing on the ground. Diagnose before you keep topping off.
