Call or Text (352) 722-5295Starters on the 2007.5-2009 Ram 6.7L Cummins
The 6.7L Cummins is an inline-six with 17.2:1 compression, and a gear-reduction starter does the work of turning it over. There are no glow plugs. An intake grid heater warms the incoming air for cold starts and keeps cycling after the engine fires. Two 12-volt batteries in parallel supply the current, so the starter can only crank as well as the batteries and cables feeding it.
What fails and why
Starter trouble on these trucks is easy to misdiagnose, because the documented problems sit around the starter. A corroded grid heater stud or cable causes slow cranking in the cold, voltage dips and grid heater codes. Owner complaints on 2008 trucks include battery cable problems with hard starting and low voltage. Before replacing a starter, load-test both batteries, check the cable ends and grounds, and look at the grid heater connections.
Stock replacement vs. upgrade
The starters here are gear-reduction units, the same type the factory used. XDP sells its starter as a heavy-duty replacement. Once you have ruled out the batteries and cables, a new starter is the right fix for a truck that still cranks slowly, and a heavy-duty unit is a reasonable choice for a truck that sees a lot of cold starts. If the batteries test weak along the way, replace both as a matched pair. Factory starter part numbers could not be confirmed by year alone, so verify by VIN.
What we carry
XDP offers the XD259 HD gear-reduction starter in a wrinkle black finish, listed for 2007.5-2024 6.7L Cummins, and the XD534 starter bolt kit in black phosphate for the same range. Mean Green offers the 9029 gear-reduction starter, listed for 2007-2018 5.9L and 6.7L Cummins. New bolts are worth adding if the originals are rusted.
Fitment notes
This page is for 2007.5-2009 Ram 2500 and 3500 trucks with the 6.7L. Early 2007 trucks have the 5.9L, so make sure you know which engine is in yours. The Mean Green 9029 lists both 5.9L and 6.7L trucks, and the XDP parts run into later 6.7L years; a wide listed range is a reason to confirm, not to assume. Use the fitment checker on the product page or call us with your VIN, and take extra care on 4500/5500 chassis cabs, where most pickup parts do not interchange.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know it is the starter and not the batteries?
Test the batteries and cables first. On these trucks slow cranking is usually the batteries or cables before it is the starter. Load-test both batteries, check that the cable ends are clean and tight, and check the grid heater connections. If all of that passes and the crank is still slow, the starter is the next suspect.
Will a new starter fix hard starting in cold weather?
Not if the problem is the grid heater circuit or the batteries. This engine starts cold on an intake grid heater, not glow plugs, and a corroded heater stud or cable causes slow cranking and voltage dips in the cold. Fix the connections and batteries first.
Should I replace the starter bolts too?
It is a good idea if the old bolts are rusted or the threads look rough. The XDP XD534 kit is listed for 2007.5-2024 6.7L Cummins trucks and comes in a black phosphate finish. Fresh hardware makes the install go smoother.
Does the Mean Green 9029 fit a 2007.5-2009 6.7L?
It is listed for 2007-2018 5.9L and 6.7L Cummins trucks, which includes these years. Confirm with the fitment checker on the product page or call us with your VIN before you order.
