Cables, starter hardware and a starting aid for the charging and starting system on the 2007.5-2009 Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500 with the 6.7L Cummins. The thing to know: battery cables, the grid heater circuit, relays and the TIPM are where most starting and charging trouble begins on these trucks, so this is the page to check before you buy a starter or alternator.

Charging and starting parts on the 2007.5-2009 Ram 6.7L Cummins

The 6.7L Cummins starts on two 12-volt batteries in parallel, a gear-reduction starter and an intake grid heater instead of glow plugs. The cables tie it all together. The battery cables carry starter current, the alternator cable carries charge current back to the batteries, and the grid heater circuit pulls a heavy load every time the truck starts cold. When any of those connections corrode or loosen, the whole system feels weak.

What fails and why

Grid heater connections, relays, battery cables and the TIPM are the common problem parts in this system. Owners of 2008 trucks report battery cable trouble that shows up as hard starting, intermittent gauges and low voltage. A corroded grid heater stud or cable brings slow cranking in the cold, voltage dips and grid heater codes, and age and corrosion are what drive it. The TIPM is the documented 2008 weak point for random power loss, which is worth ruling in or out when a problem comes and goes.

Stock replacement vs. upgrade

XDP's cable sets are sold as heavy-duty replacements for the factory cables. They make the most sense on a truck that has been fighting slow starts or that carries extra electrical load. If you are replacing cables, clean or replace the grid heater connections at the same time, and if the batteries are tired, replace both as a matched pair. A mismatched pair shortens the life of the newer battery.

What we carry

XDP makes most of what is here: the XD445 HD replacement battery cable set made for 2007.5-2009 6.7L trucks, the XD421 HD alternator cable, the XD422 HD high-output alternator cable for trucks running a high-output alternator, and the XD534 starter bolt kit in a black phosphate finish. Lucas Oil Sure Start starting fluid (11238) is also in this collection. This engine already has an intake grid heater, so follow the directions on the can and check your owner's manual before using any spray starting aid on it.

Fitment notes

The XD445 battery cable set is listed for 2007.5-2009 6.7L Cummins only. The XD421 and XD422 alternator cables are listed for 1994-2018 5.9L and 6.7L Cummins trucks, and the XD534 starter bolt kit for 2007.5-2024 6.7L. Early 2007 trucks have the 5.9L, so confirm which engine you have. Verify by VIN or use the fitment checker on the product page before ordering.

Frequently asked questions

My truck still starts. Why replace the battery cables?

Because a cable can be bad long before it leaves you stranded. Owner complaints on these trucks include battery cable problems showing up as hard starts, intermittent gauges and low voltage. If you are seeing any of that, or the cable ends are green and crusty, new cables are a smaller job than chasing a starter or alternator that is not the problem.

Which alternator cable do I need, XD421 or XD422?

The XD421 is XDP's HD alternator cable and the XD422 is its HD high-output alternator cable. Both are listed for 1994-2018 5.9L and 6.7L Cummins. If you are running or installing a high-output alternator, the XD422 is the one named for that job; call us if you are unsure.

What is the XD534 starter bolt kit for?

It is a set of starter mounting bolts in a black phosphate finish, listed for 2007.5-2024 6.7L Cummins trucks. If the original bolts are rusted or you are installing a new starter, fresh hardware makes the job cleaner.

Should I clean the grid heater connections when I replace cables?

Yes. The grid heater is a heavy load on cold starts, and a corroded heater stud or cable causes slow cranking, voltage dips and grid heater codes. With the cables already off, it is the right time to clean or replace those connections too.
