Call or Text (352) 722-5295Brakes on the 2007.5-2009 Ram 6.7L Cummins
The 6.7L Cummins arrived in the third-generation Ram HD in mid-2007, but the brakes did not change with it. Dual-piston front calipers came to the heavy-duty Rams in 2000 and carried straight through this generation, and the body, frame, suspension and axles carried over from the 2006-2007 trucks. What did change is the load the brakes manage. The 6.7L makes 350 hp and 650 lb-ft with the 68RFE automatic (610 lb-ft with the G56 manual), and the engine alone weighs about 1,120 lb dry. If your truck tows, the brakes are working hard every time you stop with a trailer behind you, which is why fluid, rotors and hydraulics deserve regular attention.
What fails and why
This platform does not have a documented, built-in brake defect. What owners report is wear. On trucks that tow heavy, warped or worn rotors are the pattern: pulsation in the pedal, judder when braking with a trailer, or a pedal that travels farther than it should. There are also scattered owner reports of stability-control (ESC) warning lights and parking brakes that will not hold. Those are individual reports rather than a known failure, so diagnose the actual cause before you buy parts. The hydraulic side is the part you control most easily. On G56 trucks, the brake fluid also feeds the clutch, so a contaminated reservoir affects two systems at once.
Stock replacement vs. upgrade
Most brake work on this truck is maintenance, not modification. Fresh fluid of the correct type, clean hardware and a reservoir free of debris cover a lot of ground. Where aftermarket parts make sense is fitment and finish. If you have lifted a 4WD truck, the brake lines have to match the lift, which is why BDS Suspension sells front and rear lines built for its 6-inch lift on Cummins Rams. On the master cylinder, a billet cap or reservoir cover from Wehrli Custom Fabrication replaces the factory piece and dresses up the engine bay. Neither changes how the truck stops, so put your attention on fluid and wear parts first if the pedal is not right.
What we carry
- Brake fluid: Lucas Oil DOT 3 synthetic (10825) and DOT 4 synthetic (10827).
- Cleaners: Lucas Oil non-chlorinated brake parts cleaner (10906) for calipers and hardware, and contact cleaner (10799) for electrical connections.
- Lift brake lines: BDS Suspension front brake line set and rear brake line for its 6-inch lift, listed for 2003-2011 5.9L and 6.7L Cummins 4WD trucks.
- Master cylinder dress-up: WCFab billet aluminum brake master cylinder cap and the WCF100209 reservoir cover.
Fitment notes
Use the brake fluid type printed on your master cylinder cap or in the owner's manual; on G56 manual trucks that fluid also serves the clutch, so do not top off with anything else. The BDS front line set is listed for the 2500 4WD with the BDS 6-inch lift, so 3500 owners should confirm fitment before ordering, and two-wheel-drive trucks are not covered by these lines. The WCFab cap is listed for 1998.5-2026 Cummins trucks and the WCF100209 cover for 2006-2026, so year range is not the concern on those two. These trucks were badged Dodge Ram; RAM became its own brand starting with 2010. For GVWR, towing and payload figures, go by the sticker in your door jamb rather than a generic spec sheet. When in doubt, verify by VIN.
Frequently asked questions
What brake fluid does a 2008 Ram 2500 with the 6.7L Cummins take?
Go by the spec on your master cylinder cap or in the owner's manual. On trucks with the G56 manual, DOT 3 brake fluid also runs the clutch hydraulics, so the same reservoir serves both. We carry Lucas Oil DOT 3 and DOT 4 synthetic fluid; if you are not sure which one your truck calls for, call the shop before you open the cap.
My brake pedal pulses when I stop with a trailer. Is that the rotors?
It may be. Warped or worn rotors on trucks that tow heavy are the pattern owners report on these Rams, and the symptoms are pulsation, judder with a trailer hooked up, and a long pedal. That comes from owner reports rather than a documented defect, so measure the rotors and check the trailer's own brakes before you replace anything.
Do I need longer brake lines after lifting my 2007.5-2009 Ram?
If you installed a 6-inch lift on a 4WD truck, plan on lines that match it. BDS Suspension sells a front line set and a rear line made for its 6-inch lift on 2003-2011 Cummins 4WD Rams. The front set is listed for the 2500, so confirm before ordering for a 3500.
Is the parking brake or ESC a known problem on these trucks?
Not as a pattern. There are single owner reports of an ESC warning light and of a parking brake that would not hold on the 2008 Ram 2500, but nothing that points to a common failure. Diagnose the specific fault first; an ESC light in particular needs a scan, not a guess.
