Call or Text (352) 722-5295The intake horn on the 2007.5-2009 RAM 6.7L Cummins
Air leaves the intercooler, returns through the cold-side tube and boot, and enters the cast intake horn. The horn holds the grid heater plate, the engine's only cold-start aid, and feeds the intake manifold, which is cast into the cylinder head. Banks bench-tested the factory elbow at about 38.6 lb/min of airflow, which gives you a baseline for comparing replacements.
What fails and why
Grid heater hardware. The stud and nut that hold the heater plate can loosen with age and heat and drop into the intake. The engine sits at a 5-degree rake, so the hardware rolls back to cylinder #6, and the damage can destroy the engine.
Soot buildup. Cooled EGR feeds soot into the intake. Banks states the stock intake collects soot over time and restricts airflow, and on high-mileage trucks that shows up as a gradual loss of response and higher EGT.
Stock replacement vs. upgrade
If you are pulling the horn for cleaning or gasket work and the rest is sound, a new intake hose and fresh gaskets put it back the way it came. If you want to replace the factory grid heater hardware at the same time, the Banks Monster-Ram 42797 swaps the horn for a high-flow elbow with an integrated 750-watt coil heater. Banks rates it at an 88% flow gain over stock without tuning, and it carries CARB EO D-161-170, so it is a compliant upgrade that keeps cold-start heat.
What we carry

Fitment notes
The Monster-Ram 42797 does not fit chassis cabs; a 3500 Chassis Cab takes the chassis cab version. The S&B elbow, Dorman hose and MAHLE gaskets are listed for 2007.5-2018 6.7L, so they are not for the 5.9L that came before. Verify by VIN when in doubt.
Frequently asked questions
What does the intake horn do on a 6.7L Cummins?
It carries cooled, compressed air from the intercooler into the intake manifold, and it holds the grid heater plate that warms intake air for cold starts. This engine has no glow plugs, so the horn and heater do that job together.
Why replace an intake horn that is not leaking?
Two reasons. The grid heater hardware it carries is a known failure point that can end up in cylinder #6, and on high-mileage trucks the stock elbow collects soot from EGR and restricts flow. A replacement like the Monster-Ram addresses both while keeping cold-start heat.
Which gaskets do I need when I pull the horn?
MAHLE offers the G33269 intake manifold gasket, the MS19751 intake manifold gasket set and the MIS19751 master set, all listed for 2007.5-2018 6.7L. Check each listing to see what it includes, and replace any gasket you disturb.
