Call or Text (352) 722-5295Gooseneck towing on the 2004.5-2007 Ram 5.9L Cummins
Later Rams came with a factory puck system in the bed. This generation did not. On a 2004.5-2007 truck, a gooseneck ball installs with under-bed brackets made for the truck, and B&W's Turnoverball is one of the established under-bed designs. The truck has the torque for the work: 600 lb-ft on 2004.5 trucks and 610 lb-ft from 2005, behind a 48RE automatic or a six-speed manual, with the AAM 11.5-inch full-floating rear axle on the heavy configurations. Gooseneck hardware for every truck is on our hitches page, and the rest of the engine lineup is on the Cummins page.
Pin weight and the rear of the truck
Gooseneck pin weight lands on the rear leaf springs, and rear sag is the most common towing complaint on these trucks: the rear sits low, the headlights aim high and the trailer pushes the truck. Air helper springs with a compressor control it. The rear axle deserves attention too. If you tow heavy, 75W-140 synthetic is the spec for the AAM 11.5; count the cover bolts to confirm you have one, since the 11.5 has 14. And if you run an automatic, the 48RE is rated for 560-570 lb-ft of input, below the engine's 610 lb-ft, and heavy towing on top of added power is what kills it. If you add power, stick to CARB EO-numbered products, verify per product and model year, and keep it conservative.
Turnoverball vs. other setups
The Turnoverball approach keeps the hardware under the bed, and the ball turns over for storage, so the bed floor is clear when you are hauling instead of towing. Fifth-wheel rails are the other in-bed option on this truck, and short-bed Quad Cab and Mega Cab trucks usually need a slider to run one. If you pull a gooseneck trailer, the under-bed gooseneck is the direct route.
What we carry
B&W Trailer Hitches Turnoverball gooseneck hitches, part numbers GNRK1313 and GNRK1308. Check each listing for the bracket fitment, since the right part number depends on your truck, and use the fitment checker on the product page before you order. We install everything we sell, including under-bed gooseneck hitches.
Fitment notes
These kits are for pickups. Cab-and-chassis trucks have a different frame and bed and are excluded from pickup gooseneck fitments. Know your cab and bed before you order: Regular Cab, Quad Cab or Mega Cab (2006 and later), short bed or 8-foot bed, 3500 single or dual rear wheel. These trucks were sold as the Dodge Ram and are filed under RAM here. On a 2007, confirm the engine, because trucks built after January 1, 2007 got the 6.7L Cummins.
Frequently asked questions
Does my 2004.5-2007 Ram have a factory gooseneck puck?
No. This generation has no factory puck system, so a gooseneck installs with brackets under the bed made for the truck. The B&W Turnoverball hitches in this collection are that type of install.
Will a pickup gooseneck kit fit my cab-and-chassis 3500?
No. Cab-and-chassis trucks use a different frame and bed, and they are excluded from pickup gooseneck fitments. Call the shop and we will help you sort out what does fit.
Is the gooseneck hitch's rating my truck's tow rating?
No. A hitch carries its own rating, and your truck's own rating governs. Tow to the lower of the two.
What gear oil should the rear axle run for gooseneck towing?
For heavy towing, 75W-140 synthetic is the spec for the AAM 11.5 rear axle. Count the cover bolts first; the 11.5 has a 14-bolt cover.
