2004.5-2007 Dodge 5.9L Cummins Lift Kits

BDS Suspension lift kits for the 2004.5-2007 Ram 2500 and 3500 4x4 with the 5.9L Cummins, from 3-inch kits up to 8-inch long-arm kits with FOX 2.5 coilover options. Know this going in: lifting this truck changes caster, so plan on adjustable control arms or eccentrics and an alignment with the kit, not after it.

Lift kits on the 2004.5-2007 RAM 5.9L Cummins

The front of a 4WD third-gen Dodge Ram HD is a link-coil solid axle: upper and lower trailing arms, coil springs and a two-eye track bar holding the American Axle 9.25-inch front in place, with leaf springs in the rear. The 5.9L Cummins trucks share that layout with the rest of the 2003-2009 HD lineup, which is why some kits here are listed across 5.9L and 6.7L years. A lift changes the geometry of that front end, and caster is the number you notice first. The 6-inch and 8-inch kits here come in long-arm versions, which replace the factory-length trailing arms with longer ones.

What to plan for

  • Caster and alignment. Even a 0-2 inch level needs about 5 to 5.25 degrees of caster, and the stock linkage only adjusts total toe. Plan on adjustable control arms or eccentrics with any lift.
  • Track bar. The track bar bushings and frame-end joint are already a wear point on this truck and a source of wander and death wobble. Adjustable track bars rated to 3 inches of lift exist; on a taller kit, check how the kit handles the track bar before you order.
  • Steering. The factory Y-type linkage joins the left tie rod to the drag link, so toe changes as the suspension travels. The T-type linkage used from mid-2008 retrofits to these trucks as an upgrade. Some aftermarket pitman arms used on lifted trucks have been recalled for cracking, so check any drop pitman arm for open recalls.
  • Wear parts. Ball joints and hub bearings are the weak links of this front end. Inspect them while the truck is apart.

Stock height vs. lifted

A lift is an upgrade, not a repair. If the truck mostly tows, a leveling kit, fresh shocks or air helper springs may be all it needs. If you want height and tire room, treat the lift as a system. One documented 2004 build used multi-rate front coils that gave about 3 inches of lift, progressive add-a-pack rear leaves, an adjustable track bar, reservoir shocks and bearing-end control arms, all chosen to work together.

What we carry

Every kit in this collection is from BDS Suspension and is listed for 4WD trucks.

  • 3-inch lift kits, standard or with FOX 2.5 coilover conversion, listed for 2003-2013 5.9L and 6.7L Cummins trucks.
  • 6-inch lift kits in standard and long-arm versions, plus a 6-inch long-arm kit with FOX 2.5 coil-over conversion shocks, listed for 2003-2007 5.9L trucks.
  • 8-inch long-arm lift kits, standard or with FOX 2.5 coilover conversion, listed for 2003-2007 5.9L trucks.
  • FOX 2.5 coil-over conversion upgrades for the 6-inch and 8-inch Factory Series lifts, which BDS lists for 6.7L trucks.

Fitment notes

These kits are 4WD only; 2WD owners should look at the leveling kits. Read the engine call-out in each title. Several kits are listed for the 5.9L only, and the FOX conversion upgrades are listed for the 6.7L, so call us before ordering one for a 5.9L truck. On a 2007, check the engine itself, because trucks built after January 1, 2007 got the 6.7L. Front-end parts for 2003 and later do not cross to 1994-2002 trucks. Run your VIN through the fitment checker or call before you order.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need new control arms and an alignment after lifting my Ram 2500?

Plan on it. Even a 0-2 inch level wants about 5 to 5.25 degrees of caster, and the stock linkage only adjusts total toe, so adjustable control arms or eccentrics belong with any lift on this truck. Get it aligned once everything is installed and torqued.

What is the difference between the standard and long-arm 6-inch kits?

Both are BDS 6-inch kits listed for 2003-2007 5.9L 4WD trucks. The long-arm version replaces the factory-length trailing arms with longer ones, and one long-arm kit adds FOX 2.5 coil-over conversion shocks. Tell us how you use the truck and we will help you pick.

Will a lift kit cure death wobble?

No. Death wobble is play in the front end set off by a bump, usually at the track bar, tie rods, ball joints or steering box. Find the loose part with the saw-the-wheel test, a helper turning the wheel with the truck on the ground, and replace it. Then lift the truck.
